Attendance Matters!

Did you know that school attendance is the number one indicator of academic success for students? Students who attend school regularly will feel more connected to classmates and staff. They are more likely to participate in extra-curricular activities, which will in turn motivate them to perform well academically.

Students who average 14 absences per year miss nearly an entire year of school by 12th grade. This learning gap can be very difficult to overcome. The learning that takes place in the classrom with teacher support cannot be duplicated when making up work independently.

Talk with your child about the importance of attending school. As students prepare to transition to earning high school credits toward graduation, regular attendance becomes even more critical.

If your child has missed more than 5 days of school this year for reasons other than confirmed illness (such as fever, vomiting, positive Covid test), talk with him/her about a plan to improve attendance. GJH counselors and administrators will be happy to help you with creating that plan!

Attention 8th Grade Parents!

SAVE THE DATES!! Important information regarding transition to high school:

At GHS – Parents are invited to attend one of the Q and A session in the cafeteria, followed by building tours. Parents are asked to view this GHS Transition Powerpoint before attending these sessions. Due to size limitations, only one parent & their 8th grader should attend this session.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023 – from 6-7:30 PM at GHS (starting in cafeteria)
  • Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023 – from 9-10:30 AM at GHS (starting in cafeteria)
  • At GJHS – High school counselors offer four follow up Q & A sessions in the auditorium. In addition, parents are encouraged to attend one of the presentations at GHS prior to attending this Q & A session:

    • Monday, Feb. 13th - Start times at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m.

  • August 15th, 2023 (the day before school starts) GHS Freshman Orientation from 9 to noon. Students will listen to basic information in the auditorium, be able to take a building tour and then do a walk-through of their schedule

GHS Course Selection for 8th Grade Students

During the month of January, GHS counselors met with eighth grade students regarding electives course selections and developing a Flight Plan for high school graduation. Students should have brought home a copy of their selections for parents to sign approval and return to GJHS. Students will finalize their course selections when the counselors return to GJHS on February 16 and 17. For introductory information regarding GHS student Flight Plans and Graduation Pathways, please view this GHS Flight Plans video.
