Ms. Sampson's science class was learning in a fun way today. Students were split into teams to work on their vocabulary words. One team member was wearing the large pants to catch the balls, but they could only throw it into the pants if they had correctly given a definition, example, or used the vocab word in a sentence!

Way to make learning fun!

Our science classes have hit the ground running this semester!

Freshman Physical Science students started the year by practicing unit conversions—a valuable life skill—and spent the first week perfecting it. Since then, they’ve explored the foundations of science and the scientific method. Now, as the class moves into Forces and Motion, students measured their average running speed in meters per second and converted it to kilometers per hour, comparing their results to the speeds of various land animals. Pictured below is the 2nd Block class putting their speed to the test.

Sophomore Biology students are diving into ecology and are preparing for a field trip to the pond in the next week or two to connect classroom learning with the natural world. Their first labs have focused on testing different water sources around the school—bottled, distilled, tap, hot tap, drinking fountain, and water bottle station—to compare quality and safety. Another experiment challenged students to design homemade solutions to help cut roses last longer. Some added dye to their solutions, revealing capillary action as the roses absorbed both water and nutrients. These beautiful white roses were generously donated by Showers of Flowers—a big thank you for their support! Below, Shay Poss and Kenna Madrid proudly display their roses.

Chemistry (Junior/Senior Elective) has been moving quickly through review and jumping into exciting lab work. One standout experiment involved combining aqueous silver nitrate with solid copper, producing solid silver and aqueous copper nitrate. While Kolton Strand was a little disappointed that the amount of silver wasn’t quite pawn shop worthy, he was able to confirm the product by identifying its physical properties. Meanwhile, Carlos tested the leftover solution using both chemical and physical methods: the solution turned blue (a characteristic of copper nitrate), and a flame test produced a blue-green flame, confirming the presence of copper ions. If any silver had remained, the flame would have shown no color change. Below are pictures of Kolton and Carlos in action during the lab.
