A Message From Our Principal Karen LaMunyon
⭐ Raise Craze Is Here, Mavs! ⭐
This week, our Mavs are kicking off Raise Craze with a mission to spread kindness and make a difference together! Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll celebrate and shout out the acts of kindness our students share at school and in our community.
Our schoolwide goal is $20,000 for donations toward playground equipment, Mav Time electives, and teacher grants that support student learning. We are grateful for every family and donor who helps make these opportunities possible. Now our students get to pay that generosity forward through kindness and team service projects.
Fall Conferences Are Coming Up!
MSIS conferences will be held Thursday, October 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Your child’s teachers will send a ParentSquare invitation this week with details and a link to sign up.
We look forward to connecting with you and celebrating your child’s progress together!
Thank you for supporting our Mavs!
We are better together!
Mavs on a Mission! 🚀🖤💛

All About Attendance
KANSAS STATE LAW STATES:
A student is officially truant after missing a substantial part of the school day on
3 CONSECUTIVE DAYS, 5 DAYS IN A SEMESTER, OR 7 DAYS IN A YEAR.
MAIZE SCHOOL DISTRICT ATTENDANCE POLICY:
The district allows 7 parent excused days before needing additional documentation. After the 7 parent excused days, we will need professional documentation (medical note) for an absence to be excused. If we do not have that documentation, the day will be marked as unexcused.
Per Kansas State Law, the school district will report truancy after unexcused absences accumulate THREE IN A ROW, 5 IN A SEMESTER, 7 IN A SCHOOL YEAR,
PLANNING AN EXTENDED ABSENCE?
If you know your student will have an extended absence ahead of time (family vacation, etc.) please fill out an Administrative Excuse Form prior to the absence. These forms are available from your student's counselor, administrator, or the office secretaries.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
PARENT EXCUSED ABSENSE
When a parent contacts the school the day of the student's absence to communicate about the student being absent. Parents are allowed SEVEN of these "parent excused" absences a year. After SEVEN you will be required to provide additional documentation for the absence.
MEDICAL EXCUSED ABSENCE
When the school receives a note from a doctor's office, dentist office, or any other medical office stating why the student missed school. If further documentation is received, the absence is excused and does not count towards the "7 parent excused absences."
COMMUNICATION IS KEY!
IF YOUR STUDENT IS GOING TO BE ABSENT, PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH THE SCHOOL AND TURN IN A MEDICAL NOTE TO THE OFFICE SECRETARIES IF POSSIBLE.

Counselor Corner
We would like to introduce ourselves! Ms. Caitlin will be moving up to sixth grade (Class of 2033!) this year and Mr. Tyler will be the fifth grade (Class of 2034!) counselor this year. We are SO ready and excited for students to be back in the building! Our goals this month are to get to know every student and create an environment where students feel safe and comfortable with us. Students can request to see the counselor through their class link page or through our Google Classroom. We will review this during our first counselor lesson the first week of school!
What does the School Counselor do?
~Monthly Counselor Lessons over topics such as empathy, kindness, gratitude, and career exploration.
~Group Counseling
~Individual Counseling on a short term basis
~Help with connecting families to outside community and therapy resources
If you think your child may benefit from seeing the school counselor, please do not hesitate to reach out. Our mission is to make MSIS a safe, loving place for all students and we are happy to help with any needs that may arise throughout the year!

Nurse's Office
Hello! I am Jaime Smith, school nurse, and I am excited to help our students and families in any way possible.
In-Office Stock Medications
The health office still has over the counter stock medications. We have acetaminophen (chewables, liquid and tablets), ibuprofen (chewables, liquid, and tablets), cetirizine (liquid, dissolving tablets and tablets), Benadryl (chewable and pills), and tums (chewables). **Please see Skyward and complete the Online Form titled Over the Counter Medication Consent Form 2025-26.** This has to be completed prior to me administering these medications. The health office will ALWAYS attempt to contact a parent prior to administering these medications to your student.
Immunizations
Please ensure all students are up-to-date on immunizations. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the state law for vaccine requirements, please click here. The immunization exclusion date is October 1, 2025. Documentation needs to be submitted to the nurse’s office!
Brought from Home Medications
Reminder: Students are NOT allowed to carry any medication (unless it’s an emergency medication that we have a doctor's order on file for). Any medication that is brought into school will be kept in the Health Office, needs to be in the original container, and have the Authorization for Medication form completed. Only prescription medications need the physician’s signature.
Screenings
The following screenings will be administered to your student this year:
All 5th grade students will have a vision screening
All 5th and 6th grade students will have a dental screening
All new students to the district will have a hearing AND vision screening
Please feel free to contact me by stopping by my office, calling, or emailing me if you have any questions or concerns about your student. Thank you for taking an interest in your child’s health and well-being!

2026–27 school year. Help us celebrate successes, share ideas, and support our
students and school!

Volunteer Background Checks
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Maize South Intermediate! Our school is “Mavs on a Mission”, and we are grateful for the help and support of our community members and volunteers.
Safety is a top priority for our school. Background checks are required and must be completed annually. All visitors moving beyond the school front office and its secure vestibule will also complete a Raptor Visitor Management System screening and receive a temporary, self-adhesive visitor name tag printed each time they visit.
District-Paid: Maize Schools do not wish to discourage any potential volunteer from getting involved in our classrooms or attending field trips with our students. Maize USD 266 will pay for your background screening.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and district!
