FHS LibraryQuarterlySummer 2026

“So slip on your goggles and your reading trunks, for the sun is high. [...] In what season of the year do we find ourselves – I’m speaking for a moment in terms of the physical world – wading through things? Surf. Kelp. Books. Summer.”

- Roy Blount Jr., "Summer Reading", NY Times, June 1985

Ms. Courchesne's Book Pick: Buckeye by Patrick Ryan

Buckeye is Patrick Ryan's first novel for adults; he has previous published YA novels and short stories. About 50 pages in, I felt like I was already reading a book that I would think about for years. It follows two generations of two families from Ohio across the expansive sweep of history from WWII to the Vietnam War, and yet we feel intimately connected to its characters. The families share a major secret between them, and holding that secret both brings them together and tears them apart. I loved this book from cover to cover - consider it for your summer reading.

Ms. Maher's Book Pick: Whistler by Ann Patchett

This beautifully written novel begins with a chance encounter at the MET in NYC. A step father reunites with his step daughter, who is now fifty three years old. The last time they saw each other Daphne was nine years old and her mother was unexpectedly divorcing her step father, Eddie. For over forty years Daphne has blamed the divorce on the accident that occured while Eddie was driving with Daphne in the car. The chance encounter leads to an intimate friendship and reveals hidden truths about the past. This book is about family, friendship and the secrets we keep from the ones we love most. I sat down to read this book in one setting. I could not stop once I started.

Ms. May's Book Pick: Honeysuckle and Bone by Trisha Tobias

Honeysuckle and Bone is a YA ghost story with a twist. Carina is a teen with a tumultuous life grieving her best friend's death. As an attempt to escape her troubles, she takes on the friend's dream job as a nanny for a wealthy Jamaican Family. The life of luxury she was expecting takes a dramatic and spooky turn. The mansion is haunted, she is riddled with guilt, and her days are consumed with the unforgiving and often terrifying Jamaican folklore. Carina confronts her demons and gains an appreciation for her roots as a Jamaican American.
