MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
CHS Community,
We’ve wrapped up a very SPIRITED WEEK here at CHS! I am beyond impressed with the creativity and school pride our students have shown throughout another successful Spirit Week. I’d also like to extend a big thank you to the Gridiron Club for decorating our hallways and boosting our school spirit.
This weekend promises to be exciting as we cheer on our boys' cross country team and Briella Hewitt, who will represent Chardon at the state cross-country meet. Additionally, our football team has secured a home playoff game against Tallmadge. Don’t miss the highly anticipated Chardon High School Marching Band costume performance during halftime! Make sure to stay in your seat and enjoy what promises to be an unforgettable show as our talented musicians take the field in full costume.
Let’s rally together in support of our student-athletes and show them that Chardon stands behind them as they compete.
NEVER TOO OLD FOR HALLOWEEN
On Thursday, CHS welcomed some tiny trick-or-treaters as preschool and kindergarten students from CELC walked through our halls, proudly displaying their Halloween costumes alongside our high schoolers. It was a delightful sight, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone involved. Events like these highlight the close-knit, supportive spirit of the Chardon community, where students of all ages come together to create shared memories and experiences.
Below are some kind thank-you messages from the CELC staff expressing their gratitude for the warm welcome and fun atmosphere.
From Mrs. Ridgeway, Kindergarten Teacher
Just wanted to say thank you to all of the HS Topper staff and admin for making this a memorable visit. Our Tiny Toppers were thrilled to see the "BIG KIDS!" Events like this are what make Chardon an awesome community.
From Mrs. Dicato, CHS Teacher
I wanted to thank you for today! None of the PreK/K kids looked scared, they all looked so happy! Our high school students that got to hand out candy loved it. Rocco was so happy! Best part of my week!
So many classes participated! It felt like a community and it was wonderful!
From Mrs. Sironen, Pre-School Teacher
I cannot thank you enough for today. It was truly amazing to see all of the staff and kids out in the hallways welcoming us. My kids were so excited and proud of their costumes. High schoolers were so cute giving high fives and fist bumps, telling our kids they were cute or scary.
SENSELESS ACT
This past week, we experienced a frustrating and harmful act in the form of an alleged threat to the safety of our school. While this kind of event is both annoying and anger-inducing, I am incredibly proud of how our students, staff, and local authorities handled the situation. We cannot control others' actions, but we can control our responses—and this is precisely why we conduct regular safety drills. We will continue to be vigilant and learn from incidents like this, so we can continue to improve the safety of our schools.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
BUILDING ACADEMIC SCHEDULE
Normal schedule next week.
Enjoy your weekend.
Mr. Tomco

IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION for CCP STUDENTS
Due to changes in FERPA expectations and athletic eligibility, ALL students taking CCP classes must have their Quarter 1 grades verified by their Professor(s). This includes classes taken within Chardon High School taught by our teachers, CCP classes taken off campus at Lakeland/Lake Erie/Kent, and CCP classes taught online.
The CCP Eligibility Report Sheet is available in Guidance and Athletics. Students must have passing grades within their CCP classes, verified by their Instructors, at the end of each Quarter in order to be eligible for the proceeding Quarter. These are the same eligibility expectations for students taking non-CCP courses.
Students taking our in-house CCP classes will be given this form the week of 10/28. Students taking CCP classes off campus are responsible for picking up the form. Forms must be returned to Doug Higham in person or via email to douglas.higham@chardonschools.org.
STUDENT REFLECTION - AFS
My name is Gianna Zarcone and I am a Junior. I spent the second semester of my sophomore year in Auckland, New Zealand as a foreign exchange student. I lived with a host family that kindly accepted me as a part of their family and showed me the Ins and Outs of Kiwi culture! I attended Rangitoto High School and explored different parts of the North Island. I learned so much about Maoris, the indigenous people of New Zealand, and things about life in general. I highly encourage everyone to take the chance and explore something new and out of your comfort zone!
How to sign up AFS makes signing up very easy and thoroughly explained. Their website makes it very easy to explore different programs and even shows you people who have gone on those programs how they felt and how their exchange went. The programs range from year-long to 3 weeks. AFS also does extensive screening on the host families that you are placed with and makes it very easy to switch host families if needed. For more information, go to https://www.afsusa.org/team/northeast-ohio/
CLSD PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK
Please click the banner below to review the updated and recently Board of Education-approved CLSD Parent-Student Handbook. This handbook is published annually to help ensure a safe and productive learning environment for students, staff, parents, and visitors. It outlines students' rights, responsibilities, and the consequences for misbehavior. Included in the district handbook is an addendum specific to Chardon High School. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the school administration.
CHS SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Financial Aid Night, November 7th
Chardon HS, in partnership with the Lake Educational Assistance Foundation (LEAF) will be hosting a Financial Aid Night for interested students and parents on Thursday, Nov. 7th at 6:00pm in the HS Cafeteria.
This presentation is highly recommended for parents with first time college bound seniors. Learn about the different types of financial aid, understanding the cost of attendance, the financial aid process, the FAFSA, and the loan/grant/scholarship processes.
AP Exam Registration & Ordering
College Board has set the AP exam fee at $99 for the 24-25 school year. These AP Exam fees will be added to student's Infinite Campus fees this week for students taking an AP course and need to be paid by the AP Exam ordering deadline which is Nov. 15th.
If your child IS NOT planning on taking the AP exam associated with their AP course, they need to have a conversation with their teacher, and reach out directly to me before the order is submitted on Nov. 15th. (in-person or via email). Once the AP exam order has been submitted on Nov. 15th, any changes to that order will result in a $45 charge.
Students that qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch/Meal Benefits will have their AP Exam fee waived. If you feel that you may qualify for these benefits, please complete the Meal Benefits application through your Infinite Campus portal.
IMPORTANT COLLEGE APPLICATION REMINDERS
November 1st is the most common Early Action deadline for schools followed closely by November 15th and December 1st. Many schools currently have application fees waived to encourage students to submit their college applications before the Early Action deadline. Take advantage of these! Be sure to check the university's website for applicable codes.
Below are some helpful reminders to keep you on track to meet your deadline.
- Double check all of your deadlines and make sure you are ready to submit your application a solid week before the deadline so you don't run into any last minute technical issues.
- Don't wait to submit your application! You should submit your application when you are finished with all your components. Your letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc. will be sent through Naviance but do not have to be submitted at the same time as the application.
- Make sure to communicate your deadlines to your recommenders. All parts of your application must be received by the university by the deadline or else it won't be considered a complete application. It helps to ensure that your Bio Form has been completed in Google Classroom so the counselors and recommenders have access to all your activities and other information.
- Log into Naviance and make sure you have connected your Common App AND requested your transcripts. We do not receive a notification until a student has requested their transcript. This is the most commonly missed step of the process in Naviance. Also double check that you have sent the recommendation letter request through Naviance so your teachers can upload and submit the documents.
- If you are submitting your SAT or ACT score, double check the institution's website to see how they accept the scores. Many universities will only consider scores that are sent directly from CollegeBoard or ACT.
As a reminder, the school counselors have college application help sessions every Friday in the media center. This is a great opportunity to bring your Chromebook and work on your applications - even if you don't have questions!
Happy applying!
