What are makerspaces?

Makerspaces are not defined by the space, but by the mindset of incorporating design thinking, the inquiry process, and collaboration. Makerspaces are a way to create a time for learners to create, design, explore, tinker, and question!

Divergent Thinking & Problem Solving

"When kids embrace a maker mindset, they learn to think divergently and solve problems by connecting seemingly disconnected ideas. They learn to take creative risks and try new things. They learn to embrace iterative thinking as they move through the creative process. In the process, they experience failure and develop a growth mindset. They become systems thinkers who can navigate complexity but they also become hackers and rebels who change the world. In other words, they become innovators." Engineering for Kids!

"The engineering design process, by definition, is a series of steps that engineers use to find a solution to a problem. These steps include: defining the problem, brainstorming solutions, designing and building a prototype of the solution, testing the solution, and improving it! Follow this link to learn more:

Novel Engineering!

Students use existing classroom literature, stories, novels, and expository texts as the basis for engineering design challenges that help them identify problems, design realistic solutions, and engage in the Engineering Design Process while reinforcing their literacy skills. As they read the text, students are prompted to identify problems faced by characters in the text and whether these problems are ones that might be addressed with a product or process that the students could design in the classroom. What role should libraries have in the maker space movement?

School libraries are a resource for hardcopy books, technology, digital tools, and maker supplies. The 21st century library media specialist supports students with design thinking through a literacy rich environment infused with STEAM & the engineering design process. Connecting students with materials and information resources to support student inquiry through the integration of STEAM & the Next Generation Learning Standards.

How can you support STEAM in our Library Makerspace?

Makerspace integrates the school curriculum through STEAM: science, technology, engineering, arts, & mathematics. Example materials include legos, art supplies, TinkerToys, Little Bits, Osmo, Green Screen, Squish Circuits, Lego WeDo, building materials, Makey Makey, Snap Circuits, magna-tiles, Ozobots, Dash, robotics, and 3D printing. Library funding is vital! Support school libraries!

Library Expectations

Using a Growth Mindset we realize our brains need time and practice to learn new things!!

If you Fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. means, "First Attempt in Learning."

End is not the end. In fact, E.N.D. means, "Effort Never Dies."

If you get No as an answer, remember No means, "Next Opportunity."
