Week of 8/24 - 8/28 Week of 8/24 - 8/28

Testing:

We will be taking the iReady Inform (formally known as iReady Diagnostic) testing starting on Monday, August 31st. Please remember to have your child bring a fully charged Chromebook to school.

Star of the Week:

Our first star of the week will be Ethan.

Take Home Folders:

Every Friday your child will bring home their red take home folders. They should give it to you so you can take the papers out. There is a section for each week where you can write any comments or questions. Then I would like for you to sign in so that I know you saw the papers. They will then bring it back to school on Mondays. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Math:

Our first unit will focus on adding, subtracting, and working with data. Please see the attached overview for more information.

We worked on:

  • adding and subtracting within 10
  • adding and subtracting within 20
  • using connecting cubes to help solve these math problems

Phonics:

We worked on:
  • vowels and their sounds
  • spelling the sight word list 1 words
  • making words using our vowels, and h, l, m, j

Reading:

Our first unit will focus on describing how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. Please see the attached overview for more information.

We worked on:

  • understanding what it means to have major events in a story
  • learned about the beginning, middle, and end to help with identifying those major events
  • Read Get a Hit Mo and identified the beginning, middle, and end.
  • Used Get a Hit Mo to understand Mo's challenges and how he responded to those challenges

Writing and Science:

In writing, we worked on:

  • understanding what is needed to write a complete sentence
  • practiced writing complete sentences

In science, we worked on:

  • how animals and plants need each other to survive
  • learned key vocabulary words needed to understand our unit (life cycle, needs, nutrient, shelter, disperse, pollination, metamorphosis, and pollen)

Classroom Expectations:

We brainstormed together and came up with our classroom expectations that we think will help us have a great year. I will continue to review these expectations with them. If you want to go over them with your child as well, I would appreciate it.

Chromebooks:

Chromebooks should go back and forth from home to school every day. It is important to charge it at home since we only have one outlet accessible in our classroom.

iReady:

The goal for 2nd grade is to have 45 minutes in reading and 45 minutes in math. We try to complete this in class but there are times that we do not get all of our minutes or if there are absences. If you want to look on Fridays and see if they have met their minutes, that would be helpful. The week will start over on Monday so they have until Sunday to complete it. I can tell you that I see great progress on their diagnostic and in the classroom when they get all of their minutes done each week.

Transportation:

If there is a change to the way your child will be dismissed, it needs to be done by 2:30pm. You can send me an email but most importantly, please call the office. There are many instances where I do not look at my email until after school.

Snacks:

Your child may bring a healthy snack to have in the morning. This is something that they should be able to eat in about 5 minutes or so. Some ideas: fruit, vegetables, granola bars, crackers, yogurt, string cheese, etc. Chips and cookies are not allowed as a snack. Bringing a snack is completely optional. NO NUTS/peanut butter for snacks, please.

The children may bring a water bottle to leave on their desks, but I only allow water... no juice/pop/prime drinks. I appreciate your help with this.
