A Note from the Principal:

Dear Blue Jay Families,

Welcome Back! We are so excited to welcome our teachers back and shortly after our Bluejays. This email contains very important information about events, transportation and the first days of school. Please read it carefully and be sure to complete the transportation form, it will open on 8/17, linked below for each of your children. You will also find information about two upcoming events in August. Please add these dates to your calendar, we look forward to seeing you there!

As a reminder, we are providing all school supplies this year. Your Bluejay only needs a backpack, water bottle, and lunch box (for packers).

Mrs. Burke

Upcoming Dates:

August:

August 20th:

Meet the Teacher

2:00-2:45: Last Names A-M

3:00-3:45: Last Names N-Z

This is a drop in event. Drop in during your assigned time. If your family has multiple last names, please choose one time slot to come. You do not need to come twice. We will have transportation tags available. Look up your child's teacher on ParentVue before coming, or report to the Cafeteria for assistance. Do not call the school for this information.

August 24th:

First Day of School

It is a special Barnhart tradition to welcome our students on the first day of school! We encourage all parents, guardians, aunts/uncles, grandparents, little siblings etc who are able to arrive by 8:40 a.m. and help us create a welcoming tunnel for students to walk through as they enter the building. This is the only morning when families may park in the bus parking lanes if no other parking is available. We look forward to cheering, giving high fives, offering handshakes and hugs, and wishing every Blue Jay a wonderful start to the school year!

September:

September 3rd:

Back-to-School Night

We invite all families to attend Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 3. This evening will provide an opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, learn their expectations, visit the special-area classrooms, learn more about our Title I and Community Schools programs, and tour the building. Please note that Back-to-School Night is not intended for individual parent-teacher conferences. If you need to discuss a specific concern or your child’s individual needs, please email the teacher to schedule a separate meeting. Families of students with last names beginning with A–M should attend from 5:30–6:15 p.m., and families of students with last names beginning with N–Z should attend from 6:15–7:00 p.m. Teachers will have presentations so please be here in time to be to your first child's classroom at the start time. There will be two sessions for each time slot in case you have multiple teachers to meet. After you have met your teachers, stop by the cafeteria for a sweet treat.

Transportation Information

This year, we are asking families to complete a Digital Transportation Form for each child. This form will help our staff know how your child will travel to and from school each day, including whether they are a:

  • Car rider

  • Daycare van rider

  • Bus rider

  • Attending AlphaBEST

  • Walker

Each child must have one primary method of transportation home, and your child will be sent home that way every day unless the main office receives an email requesting a change. Transportation changes should be made only when absolutely necessary or in the case of an emergency. Frequent changes make it difficult for staff to ensure that every child is safely sent to the correct location. We do not accept transportation changes by phone. Because teachers may not be able to check email before dismissal, all transportation change requests must be emailed directly to the main office before 3:00 p.m. A completed transportation form must be on file for every student no later than Friday, August 21, 2026. This form will open on Monday, August 17th.

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

Morning Arrival Procedures

Doors open at 8:45 a.m. There is no school supervision before that time, so students must remain with an adult until the doors open. Independent walkers should plan to arrive around 8:45 and may wait on the benches for the doors to open. Parents and guardians may not walk students to their classrooms. Please support your child’s independence by allowing them to enter the building on their own. During our Meet and Greet, we encourage you to have your child practice walking from the front door to their classroom so they feel confident and comfortable on the first day. Staff members will be available to help students reach their classrooms safely.

Walkers:
All walkers should line up at the main entrance. Students may enter the building beginning at 8:45 a.m.

Morning Car Rider Procedures:

  • All vehicles must enter through Entrance A (see map below) near Lady Bug Park and follow the designated morning car rider route. Cars may not use the bus entrance.
  • Student drop-off begins at 8:45 a.m. in the loop at the front of the building. Students may not be dropped off before 8:45 a.m. or at any other location.
  • To keep the car line moving safely and efficiently, please have your child ready to exit the vehicle with all belongings. Drivers must remain in their vehicles during drop-off.

Bus and Van Riders:
All buses and daycare vans will enter through Entrance B at O'Grady Pl.

Tardy:

Students are considered late at 9:00 a.m. Please arrive early enough for your child to enter at 8:45 a.m., eat breakfast if needed, and be ready to begin the school day promptly at 9:00 a.m. Breakfast is not served after 9:05 a.m. If you arrive after 9:00, park (not in the circle)walk your child inside and sign them in. Students may not be dropped off on the curb after 9:00am.

The car rider line is typically longest between 8:50 and 9:00 a.m. To ensure that your child enters the building before the school day begins, families are strongly encouraged to arrive closer to 8:45 a.m.

Dismissal Procedures

We ask that your child follow their regular dismissal routine on the first day of school. This helps ensure they know exactly what to do on day two, avoiding any confusion and building independence right from the start.

Early Dismissal:

Please remember that early dismissal ends at 3:00 p.m. each day. The front office becomes a very busy place at the end of the school day as we work to ensure that every student gets home safely and through the correct dismissal method. For this reason, students will not be dismissed from the office between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. If your child has an appointment or needs to leave school early for any reason, please plan to arrive at the school before 3:00 p.m. Thank you for helping us keep dismissal safe, organized, and efficient for all of our Blue Jays!

Walkers:

  • All walkers will be dismissed to the Pre-K playground.
  • Adults picking up a walker must park at Lady Bug Park and walk to the designated walker pick-up area. Students must be picked up directly from their teacher at the exits to the walled area of the Pre-K playground.
  • Adults must wait on the paved path outside the Pre-K playground’s walled area. Please do not gather near the school doors, on the sidewalk, or in the student exit path. Crowding these areas makes it difficult for students and staff to exit the building safely.
  • Please remain in the designated waiting area and have a valid photo ID ready to show staff.
  • Students who have permission to walk home independently will be released directly from school. This must be clearly indicated on the student’s transportation form.
  • If you are driving to pick up your child, your child should be designated as a car rider and picked up through the car line. Adults may not park in the school lot and walk up to pick up a student as a walker.

Car Riders:

  • All car riders must be picked up through the designated car rider line. Parking and walking up to pick up a car rider is not permitted.
  • Vehicles must enter using Entrance B from O’Grady Place, closest to Smallwood Drive. Cars may not enter through Entrance A during afternoon dismissal. Any vehicle entering the wrong way or blocking the line will be directed to move to the end of the car rider line.
  • After entering, remain close to the left curb and begin lining up at the barrier. Do not pass other vehicles for any reason. Staff will remove the barrier at approximately 3:25 p.m. and direct vehicles into the pick-up circle. Please wait for staff instructions before pulling forward so that buses have enough space to exit safely.
  • You may not park in the school lot in order to pass the line.
  • Your car rider tag must remain clearly visible on the passenger side of your vehicle throughout the entire pick-up process. You must also have a valid photo ID available at all times. If you do not have your car rider tag or cannot provide identification, you may be directed to park and report to the main office before your child is released.
  • Students will be grouped with all children assigned to the same vehicle. You will stop once to pick up everyone in your family group. If a student is not ready, you will be directed to pull forward and wait.
  • Drivers must follow all posted speed limits, stop signs, crosswalks, and staff directions. Please remain alert for students and families walking near the parking lot.
  • If you prefer to park and walk up to pick up your child, you must park at Lady Bug Park and designate your child as a walker.
  • Transportation changes should be made only when absolutely necessary. Any change must be emailed before 3:00 p.m. to both your child’s teacher and Mrs. Queen at tmqueen@ccboe.com. Transportation changes will not be accepted by phone.

First-Day Arrival for Kindergarten Students

On the first day of school, all kindergarten students should report to the Pre-K playground, located directly to the left of the school’s main entrance. Kindergarten teachers will meet students there, organize them into their assigned classes, and escort them to their classrooms.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

We are asking all families to take a few minutes to complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meals application. Families who received this benefit last school year must reapply each year. Students who received free or reduced-price meals last year are only covered through October 4, so please submit a new application as soon as possible to avoid any interruption in benefits.

Completing this application is important not only because it may provide direct support to your family, but also because the percentage of students who qualify helps our school maintain valuable programs and services, including Title I funding, Community School status, and free breakfast for all students. Paper applications will also be available. We appreciate your partnership in ensuring that every family completes the application.

Birthday Celebrations

To help us keep all students safe, all birthday treats must be store-bought, individually wrapped, and include nutritional and ingredient information on each individual item. Because of classroom allergies and other dietary needs, all birthday treats and celebrations must be pre-approved by the classroom teacher. Items that have not been approved in advance or do not have the proper labeling will be sent back home. Please note that we do not hold birthday parties during the school day. Approved birthday treats are shared only during the class’s scheduled lunchtime, so items must arrive at school prior to that time. Foods such as pizza, loose donuts, cakes, cupcakes without individual labeling, or other shared food items are not permitted. Teachers prefer non-edible items, such as a pencil, eraser, sticker, or another small item, as a simple way to recognize your child’s special day. Additionally, items such as flowers, balloons, or other birthday deliveries should not be sent to school. Thank you for helping us celebrate our students in a way that is safe, simple, and does not interrupt the instructional day.
