A Note From Dr. Compton A Note From Dr. Compton

Happy Sunday, Pride and Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Let me start with a question... What do I (Dr. Compton) and Labor Day have in common? If you guessed President Grover Cleveland, you are 100% correct.

I'll be honest until this week, my understanding of Labor Day started and ended with "no more white pants after this weekend." I knew it had something to do with "labor," but I didn't really know why we have it, so I did some digging, and it turns out the story is more interesting than I expected.

Labor Day didn't come from a calendar committee looking for a nice long weekend to close out summer. It came out of the labor movement of the 1880s, when work weeks regularly stretched to 60+ hours, with no minimum age for the kids working alongside adults in mills and factories. The first Labor Day parade happened in New York City in 1882, organized by unions to give workers a public day to be seen and honored for what they built.

But the moment it became a federal holiday tells you even more. In 1894, following a national railroad strike, Congress rushed to pass legislation creating the holiday, and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law just six days later. It was, in part, an attempt to repair a fractured relationship between the government and American workers.

And yes, a few years back, I found out that President Cleveland is my third cousin, six times removed. So Labor Day feels a little bit like a family reunion this year, even if the relative in question has been gone for over a century.

So Labor Day isn't really about the end of summer at all. It's about dignity. It’s about the idea that the people who do the work deserve to be seen, valued, and given a moment of rest, not just tolerated as replaceable parts of a machine.

That's not a bad thing to sit with here at Riverwalk. Every day, this place runs because people show up and do the work, often quietly, often before the rest of us even arrive, and rarely with anyone watching. So this weekend, as you're enjoying the extra day off, take a minute to think about the people who make Riverwalk what it is.

In Pride and Purpose,

~Dr. Compton
