Last Day of School
It's probably hard to think about summer vacation as flurries fall outside, but please note that the last day of school for students has changed to Friday, June 12, 2026. It will be a FULL day, no early dismissal. Teachers, however, still have a work day on Monday, June 15, 2026.
This is a change from the previously approved calendar, so please update your plans accordingly. It was discussed and approved at the school-board meeting on March 18, 2026.
Save the Date...
We are hoping to have a Start of Summer Celebration
the evening of
Wednesday, June 10.

A letter from Commissioner Caitlin Davis ~ New Hampshire Department of Education
Letter attached below...
Dear School Leaders,
As the statewide assessment season begins across New Hampshire, I am writing to ask for your partnership in ensuring families receive clear and consistent information about the importance of the state assessments.
I have prepared the attached letter for parents and guardians that explains the purpose of statewide assessments, how the results are used, and how families can support their students and schools in doing their best.
Because the Department does not maintain direct contact information for families, I respectfully ask that you share the attached letter directly with parents and guardians across your district and help ensure it reaches the appropriate audiences.
Your leadership in reinforcing the value of statewide assessments is critical. Encouraging students to take these assessments seriously helps ensure we have accurate, meaningful data to support students, schools, and districts across New Hampshire.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for your efforts to support students during this important time of year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
Caitlin
Congratulations Kathleen Buckley - Goyen Literacy Fellowship Finalist
(Copied from Superintendent Newsletter)
Kathleen Buckley, GVS Reading Interventionist and Specialist, has been named a finalist for the prestigious Goyen Literacy Fellowship, a national program dedicated to advancing evidence-based literacy instruction and improving student outcomes.
The fellowship brings together educators committed to strengthening their knowledge of structured literacy practices, particularly in supporting students with reading challenges such as dyslexia.
During the 2026–27 school year, Fellows will participate in a yearlong professional learning experience that includes documenting their instructional practices through blogs and videos, engaging in monthly virtual meetings, and leading both a fellowship session and a public-facing professional learning opportunity. Fellows also receive a stipend to support their work. With 28 years of experience and deep expertise in foundational reading skills, Kathleen’s selection as a finalist reflects her ongoing dedication to improving literacy outcomes for all students.
We are extremely proud of Kathleen and her deep dedication to literacy and our GVS School Community. CONGRATULATIONS!

Personal Safety Unit
Each year we partner with The Center for Safer Communities (formerly Turning Points) to teach the Care for Kids personal safety curriculum to kindergarten, first, and second graders. Prior to implementing this program, Kerry Rochford Hague (pictured below) from the Center for Safer Communities held a parent / caregiver workshop about the program and why it’s important. Please watch this short video from The Center for Safer Communities. Over the years, with new research, a lot has changed with how this subject gets presented to children. Prevention programs no longer use the terms “good touch” vs. “bad touch.” Using the term “bad touch” may inadvertently give children the misguided notion that all sexuality is “bad.” Most who harm a child in this way are well known to the child, and children have trouble judging these people or their actions as “bad.” Over one third of child sexual abuse cases are committed by juveniles.
Care for Kids lesson topics include asking for help, feelings, bodies, babies, and asking for permission (consent.) The baby dolls are introduced during the “bodies” lesson where children learn to differentiate between public and private places and that we keep our private parts private in public places. We also learn about privacy. Children learn the anatomically correct names for private body parts, which is a protective factor against child sexual abuse. Children rotate between three stations during the “babies” lesson. The stations focus on nurturing: how to feed a baby, how to hold a baby, and how children can help change a baby’s diaper. At that station children learn that while they can help the grown up, the grown up is the person who does the actual diaper change because kids don’t touch other kids private body parts. Kids really enjoy this unit and love to see the baby dolls!
State Testing Letter
February 6, 2026
Dear Grantham Village School Parent/Guardian,
Each year, New Hampshire public and chartered public schools are required by state law (RSA 193-C) and federal accountability laws (Every Student Succeeds Act) to assess students using a standardized assessment. These assessments help evaluate student progress and guide instruction. To learn more, visit the New Hampshire Department of Education’s Office of Assessment webpage.
At Grantham Village School students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in the English Language Arts (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics assessments. Our 5th grade students will also be assessed in Science. Grantham Village School will administer these assessments in May. It is beneficial if you try to avoid scheduling appointments or vacations during the testing dates. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and good breakfast, prior to testing. Let us know if your child will not be here on the scheduled testing date as we need to arrange for a makeup time.
Statewide assessments are an important part of a student’s core educational program. They measure student mastery of core academic skills, inform classroom instruction, and support learning recovery. In addition to classroom assignments, projects, essays, and local formative and summative assessments, statewide summative assessment results provide teachers and parents with valuable insight into students’ progress on their path toward academic success.
Average Testing Times Grades 3-6:
English Language Arts/Reading: 60-75 minutes
Writing: 60-75 minutes
Mathematics: 60-75 minutes
Science (Grade 5 only): 60-75 minutes
Parents may access NH SAS practice tests by going to the NH SAS assessment portal at: Students and Families. Results of the assessments are typically available shortly after a student completes the test. Parents can view test results through the Family Portal using an access code. Please contact us to obtain one. We will also send individual reports home when they become available. While state testing is not our only focus, it is an indicator of your child’s progress and the school’s effectiveness in general. A parent / guardian can request an exemption for the assessment, by contacting Kristen Reed to request an exemption form. The form must be completed and submitted prior to the start of the assessment dates. However, it should be noted that a parental request for exemption does result in the school receiving a zero for that student. We are required to have at least 95% of students in grades 3-6 complete the assessment. If you have any questions related to the assessment administration, you may contact our School Counselor, Kris Widmann. Thank you for supporting your student! Sincerely, Kristen Reed, School Principal Kris Widmann, School Counselor
