BES Family Newsletter
September 18, 2026
Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that we are more than half way through the month of September! We have settled into a routine, our Fall academic testing is coming to an end, and the first field trips of the year have already started. On Thursday, September 17th, the 3rd-5th grade traveled to the Tunbridge Fair where they explored exhibits focused on Vermont's rich agricultural present and history. In the coming weeks, students will visit apple orchards, Newbury Elementary School's Farm and Field Day, and hike to the top of Tucker Mountain. This trips help to build community, enrich classroom instruction, and provide students with the opportunity to build an appreciation of the beautiful area where we live.
In Partnership,
Edith Fogarty, Principal

Free Book Study: The Anxious Generation
Over the past several years, educators, medical professionals, and parents have recognized that today's youth seem to be suffering from a higher rate of anxiety than previous generations. In light of this new reality, OUUSD schools are organizing a book study of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Books will be provided to participants through OUUSD Title I grants. Parents, students, teachers, and community members are invited to participate. Our goal is for the book study to last 4 weeks, beginning in mid-October and ending in mid-November. Please complete this survey if you are interested in joining so that we can plan our meeting day and times.

What we're up to
The Tunbridge Fair
The third, fourth, and fifth Grade worked with Shayne Brunet, BES Farm to School Coordinator to create entries for the Tunbridge Fair, many of which won first or second place ribbons in their categories! Students were excited to spend the day at the fair, watch their peers complete, and see their winning ribbons.
A huge thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who joined 3rd grade at the Tunbridge Fair this year! We had such a fun day exploring the schoolhouse, cheering on a classmate who was competing, and checking out our beautiful sunflowers. The kids loved trying fresh apple cider and yogurt and enjoying the yummy milk provided. We truly appreciate you taking the time to make the day so special!

Oxbow Reading Buddies
This fall at Oxbow, Ms. Ditcheos' Personal Anthology students are serving as Reading Buddies for BES students. The class centers on one big idea: students explore what it means to be human by collecting, creating, and reflecting on writing connected to real emotions and experiences. Serving as Reading Buddies is an opportunity for the students to reconnect with their childhoods by reading with younger students. It is always wonderful to see former BES students all grown up!
BES PTO
The next BES PTO meeting will take place on Monday, September 28th 6-7pm in the BES Cafeteria. New members and supporters are always welcome. While we recognize that not everyone is able to attend meetings, we are always looking for parents and community members who may be able to help with donations or supporting events. Last year we held a Bingo night, supported RockFest, sponsored Tattoo a Teacher, and organized Teacher Appreciation Week events. This year we provided dessert for Back to School Night and are organizing a classroom supply drive. If you are interested in learning more, please sign up here and follow us on Facebook.
