Tarawera High SchoolNewsletter # 71 August 2025

From the Deputy Principal's Desk From the Deputy Principal's Desk

Kia ora koutou,

As the deputy principal of learning behaviours, one of my main priorities for our kura is our students' attendance. Here are a few key messages about the importance of showing up every day!

Why Attendance Matters – Hauora, Achievement, Success

At Tarawera High School, every day matters. Being at school isn’t just a legal requirement- it’s the key to your hauora (wellbeing), your learning, and your future success.

Hauora – Wellbeing & Connection

Being here every day keeps you connected to friends, teachers, and your school whānau. That sense of belonging supports your emotional wellbeing, builds resilience, and helps you feel part of something bigger.

Achievement – Learning & Progress

Every day away is a day of learning lost. In secondary school, even small gaps make it harder to keep up. Attendance means you’re in class for assessments, skill-building, and hands-on learning. Regular attendance builds discipline, reliability, and commitment which are skills employers, apprenticeships, and tertiary providers value.

Why It Matters Even More Now

With the new curriculum, learning will be more connected and hands-on. Miss a week, and you could miss opportunities that can’t be repeated.

Our Message to Students & Whānau

  • Attendance = Achievement = Opportunity
  • Every day supports your wellbeing and your success
  • We’ll work with you and your whānau to remove barriers and help you be here

Every day counts — your future starts with being here

Crafty Thursday

Craft Club fun at Thursday lunchtime! Whaea Marcelle hosted a special session with guest Nanny Dollz from our attendance services. Students learned how to upcycle plastic waste into beautiful little baskets — creativity meets sustainability!

School Ball 2025

The Tarawera High School Ball was truly a night to remember, with this year’s enchanting theme, “Once Upon a Time.” From the moment students arrived, it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The venue was transformed into a magical wonderland, with twinkling lights, elegant draping, and whimsical decor that captured the imagination and set the perfect scene for an unforgettable evening.

The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as students arrived dressed to impress. The girls dazzled in stunning gowns of every colour and style, while the boys brought their A-game with sharp suits and slick style. The effort, creativity and pride in presentation was clear to see—everyone looked incredible and truly embraced the theme.

A highlight of the night was the crowning of the Ball King and Queen. A huge congratulations to Rangi and Carys, who were voted by their peers to wear the crowns. Both were glowing with joy and celebrated with grace, representing our school with pride.

The dance floor was full all night, with DJ Jordan that kept the energy high and the vibes fun. Special mention to Justin & Eden Students laughed, danced, and made memories that will last a lifetime.

A special thank you must go to Anneke Stoman, the ball committee and all staff & students involved behind the scenes. Their hard work and attention to detail made the night such a huge success.

It was more than just a school event—it was a celebration of friendship, growth, and stepping into the next chapter of our stories. Truly, a “Once Upon a Time” that will live happily ever after in our memories.

Youth & Wellbeing Survey

📆 When: The survey session will take place at our school on Tuesday, the 5th of August

🎯 Why this matters: Just as we encourage all students to grasp the positive opportunities in academics, sports, and cultural activities, this survey presents another way for our students to engage meaningfully with their community. Their unique voices contribute to a more diverse understanding of what young New Zealanders need to thrive.

🫂Who: Up to 10,000 young people nationwide will participate in this study. Participation is completely voluntary and anonymous.

📒 What the Survey Covers: Students will share their thoughts on family, community, education, physical and mental wellbeing, aspirations and challenges.

👪 Whānau/Parent Support: We encourage you to discuss this survey with your child and support them in making the decision that feels right.

🎧Bonus: As a thank you for their time, participating students will receive a $25 digital Prezzy card, delivered through their email, and special YHWS 2025 headphones.

📎More information: Please visit the survey website www.msd.govt.nz/YHWS. If a student is selected, you’ll receive more details before the survey.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the research team at Ipsos at yhws2025@ipsos.com, freephone 0800 478 783, or free text 8009 and type ‘YHWS’ at the start of your message.
