New Advisers
3.23.26 Life after Deadline
This Week's To Do List
- Photo Contest is Almost Over- Have students enter photos to win money!
- Summer Workshops- You should have let your staff and parents know about the workshops by now. Start having students sign up to attend.
- Celebrate!- (Spring books) You're done, or close to. Have a movie day, game day, start a new tradition. Have some fun to celebrate your hard work.
- Clean- Reorganize your computer files. Clean the classroom thoroughly. Get things back in order from the chaos of deadline season.
- Finish Up Sales- Most schools have books to sell. Revisit old updates for ways to sell your book last minute.
- Summer/Fall Books- Get group photos and names taken care of before the crazy of deadline.
What Now?
If your book is finished, look at these things to take care of.
One of the best activities for now until the book arrives is cross-referencing coverage with buyers. Send “You’re in the Book” notes with purchase reminders. You can print these from Walsworth's website.
- We recommend these books be priced at a higher tier with announcements that there are only a limited number remaining. Some schools create a weekly countdown of how many books are left.
Work with staff using the marketing ideas on our website. Our year isn’t successful if we haven’t gotten our books in the hands of as many students as possible. Show off your work! Marketing and promotion projects are a great grade for this time of year.
Plan for Summer Camp and spring Leadership Workshops. (If you’re not taking students to a summer camp, I STRONGLY suggest our Adviser One-Day workshop in June.)
Start planning distribution day with the linked resource. Your distribution day should be scheduled the week after your books are scheduled to arrive. (Check your 360 portal).

What is this group?
A group of first-year (or new) advisers. Your Walsworth rep has added you to this group for new advisers. If you would like to be removed, please email me and let me know. Most Sundays, I’ll send updates to help you in your classroom. Each update will be full of checklists, classroom help and pro tips.
Who is Leland?
After accidentally joining newspaper class in seventh grade, I’ve been hooked on student journalism ever since. I advised yearbook and newspaper at Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas for 18 years and in Big Spring, Texas for seven. Legacy’s publications have earned CSPA Crowns, NSPA Pacemakers and ILPC Stars. I’ve served as Webmaster for the Texas Association of Journalism Educators (TAJE) and received multiple honors, including:
- 2025 Commended Adviser Award
- 2024 CSPA’s Distinguished Adviser Award
- 2022 JEA Media of Merit Award
- 2021 NSPA Pioneer Award
- 2018 JEA Distinguished Adviser Award
- 2015 Max Haddick Texas Adviser of the Year
- 2013 TAJE Trailblazer
- 2010 Edith Fox King Texas Journalism Teacher Award
In June, I joined the Walsworth family as the Texas Education Specialist. My job is to help you and your students build a stronger yearbook while making your job easier.
