Dear Reddix Family,

Welcome, September—a month of fresh beginnings!

It has been a true joy getting to know each of your children over these past few weeks. Our school year is off to a successful start, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you for your continued partnership in making that possible. Your support and collaboration mean the world to us.

Our dedicated staff worked tirelessly over the summer to prepare for your child’s return, and now they are fully immersed in reconnecting with returning students and building meaningful relationships with our first-time Reddix learners. It’s been a beautiful start to the year.

Daily schedules are beginning to settle into consistent routines across our campus. In our school-age classrooms, our Little & Middle Bucks are engaged in their academic work, creative art projects, and sensory activities. I’m incredibly proud of all they are already achieving!

Some of our young adult students in the transition program have begun visiting their interest-based training sites off campus this week—an exciting step forward in their growth and independence. Across the board, our students are forming new friendships and becoming more socially connected every day.

We’re also thrilled to share that the Reddix Morning News Network is officially live! Each morning, a student joins me to co-host our announcements, it’s been such a fun and energizing way to start the day together.

Thank you all for your partnership in upholding the TEA guidelines of no cell phones. Although some of our students & young adults were struggling at the beginning of the year, we can already see a difference and that is credit to our staff and YOU. Thank you.

This school year has already brought so many moments of joy, connection, and accomplishment. Thank you for being a part of it.

Person Centered Planning - What exactly is it?

We’ve kicked off a new school year here at Reddix, and by now you’ve probably heard your child’s teacher mention Scheduling a Life Plan or a Person Centered Plan, but what exactly does that mean?

At Reddix, Person Centered Planning document that helps us understand what your young adult is working toward. It gives us a big-picture view of their goals and dreams, so we can create meaningful steps to get there.

For example:

  • Does your child want a job, friendships, and to live semi-independently? Wonderful! That gives us clear goals to build on at school.

  • Is their goal to attend a day program, but current behaviors are making it harder to fully participate in the community? That gives us a starting point and a direction to grow toward.

The PCP serves as our roadmap. Each year, we revisit it, updating as needed, to ensure it reflects your child’s evolving goals. From there, the IEP goals we discuss in ARD meetings align directly with what was discussed at the Person Centered Plan.

By starting with the PCP, we ensure that everyone—families, teachers, and students are working toward the same outcome, while keeping regular conversations about how sustainable and meaningful that outcome will be in the long run.

If You Had Wings: Building more than just birdhouses.

In April 2020, as COVID became a pandemic, the restaurant where Lindsay Holcombe worked closed. “I needed something to do to help my community,” so Lindsay reached out to her friend and peer Stephen Todd. With his help and with support from family and staff, she created “If You Had Wings, Inc.”

Lindsay, Alyssa W, Connie B and Ashley B have been designing, building, painting and marketing one-of-a-kind birdhouses ever since. In 2023, hand-painted Christmas ornaments were added to her offerings.

All proceeds benefit area and national non-profit groups, with priority going to organizations celebrating, encouraging, supporting and empowering children and adults with disabilities.

To date, and with much support from the community, If You Had Wings, Inc has donated over $55,000.

Lindsay has been a North Carolina resident for 37 years. She currently resides in Morrisville with her family. In her spare time, she enjoys playing Miracle League baseball, practicing yoga, listening to the The King’s Singers, collecting college t-shirts and all things Disney related. She is the proud aunt of 8-year-old twins.

What is the Texas Driving with Disability Program?

This Texas trail-blazing program focuses on improving the interaction between law enforcement and drivers with disabilities with unique communication needs. Texans now have the option to disclose “Communication Impediment” directly on the front of their Driver License or State ID or when registering their vehicle through the DMV. This will alert the trained officer of an individual who may be slower to respond or one who is deaf or hard of hearing.
