Halfway Through First Semester!
Today marks the middle point of the First Semester and a great time to reflect on your child's year thus far! Parenting middle school students can be challenging, as this is a time of significant growth and change for your child. Here are some pieces of advice to help parents of middle school students navigate this period:
- Open Communication: Encourage open and honest communication with your child. Create a safe and non-judgmental space for them to share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Often they do not need you to say anything, simply letting your child talk allows them to process their thoughts and create their own solutions.
- Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that middle school students are undergoing physical and emotional changes. Expect mood swings and occasional conflicts, but maintain patience and empathy.
- Establish Routines: Help your child establish a daily routine for schoolwork, chores, and leisure. Consistency can reduce stress and make them feel more in control.
-Encourage Independence: Middle school is a time for kids to develop independence. Allow them to take on responsibilities and make choices within reasonable boundaries. Tasks such as making a meal all by themselves, planning an event, or organizing needed materials for a project all build healthy confidence.
- Homework Support: Offer assistance with homework, but don't do it for them. Help them create a productive study environment and encourage time management skills. Ask to see your child's grades and missing homework list. Check their Google Classroom calendars together or find the links on the Family Dashboard.
- Teach Time Management: Middle school students often juggle various activities and commitments. Teach them how to manage their time effectively, set priorities, and plan ahead. Ask your child which Bridge sessions they are attending - they may need to choose a Study Hall to complete homework so their grades do not dip.
- Positive Reinforcement: Acknowledge your child's achievements, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement can boost self-esteem and motivation. Your words matter and a pat on the back or "I'm proud of you!" goes a long way!
At CMS, we honor students' for strong academic and behavior through the Principal's List, Honor Roll, and Bronco Awards. Please see the award criteria and rewards HERE.

Educational Benefits Form
As we prepare for a successful school year, we need your help with a quick but crucial task: completing the Education Benefits Form. You might be wondering: "If meals are already free for students, why do I still need to fill out this form?" While universal free meal programs ensure our students are nourished every day, the Education Benefits Form is about much more than lunch. It is the primary tool used by the state and federal government to determine how much grant funding our school receives to support student learning and well-being.
