A Trip Down Goshen Lane
Issue 8: September 25, 2026
Superintendent Dr. Deagle spoke with Goshen Lane third grade students this week about the branches of government and how our school system operates similarly. Thank you to our AMAZING THIRD GRADE TEACHERS for organizing the memorable experience!
Principal's Message
Could we ask for a more gorgeous kickoff to the weekend? Please enjoy each other and get outside and play! Fall is definitely in the air and it feels great! A couple of details as we wrap up the week...
Start with Hello Week was such a fun way to greet students each morning, and Goshen Lane really showed up for the daily theme outfits! A special thank you to Jenn Diol, school counselor, for the time and coordination. Photos of the week coming in next in next week's newsletter.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are just a couple of weeks away. We can't wait to see you! Please be on the lookout for a signup form from each of your children's teachers. We would love to have 100% family attendance! Conference Dates: Oct. 8 and Oct. 15
Calling all artists! Papers went home a couple of weeks ago for the Yearbook Cover Art Contest. Turn in those clever ideas by Oct. 12.
With PRIDE!

End of Day Car Pick Up
Car pick up is always a busy time. Our goal is for all students to be picked up and the car line to be finished by 2:55. Some ways families can help:
- Please be at school prior to 2:55.
- Please have your car placard number hanging from your mirror. This helps the duty teacher on the microphone be able to call your child's number in the gym even when the car is still a good distance away. Then, your child has time to walk out of the gym before you pull up.
- If your child has a number but you no longer have your placard, please let a duty teacher know and we will give you a piece of paper with your child's number on it. Please plan to hold up that paper or place it on your dashboard when arriving.
- If you do not have a number but are a frequent car pick up, please let the duty teacher know and we will assign your child a number and provide you with a placard number for your car.
- Please ask your child what their car number is. If they do not know, please practice at home.
Thanks so much for your partnership in helping decrease the wait time at car pick up.
Attendance Communication Coming Soon
Dear Families, Ohio law now requires schools to track and report all student absences, regardless of whether they are excused or unexcused. Because of this, you will soon receive an update from us regarding your student's current attendance status. This outreach is simply to keep you fully informed and to ensure our school remains in compliance with state regulations. We appreciate your partnership as we work together to support your student's education.
Related Arts with Mr. Walker in the Library
As the year kicked off we started the year running and started book check out right away for grades 1-5. If you haven’t seen a book come home, some classes are still working on showing PRIDE each time they come to the media center to show they can care for their books.
This year is starting off with a review of lessons from last year so we can dive into new ideas and content. Grades 2-5 have been reviewing the Dewey Decimal system and how it organizes the non-fiction section. We have talked about how the system was created in 1876 and may not be the most up to date system, and how libraries and media centers are changing the systems to meet the needs of the people who use them. We also talked about how the spine labels tell us where a book goes and who wrote the book. We are currently looking into the history of libraries and media centers and how the sharing of writing and text started with clay tables, progressed to scrolls in the library of Alexandria, to the printing press that makes books we know today. We are currently discussing what physical, digital, and lost media means.
Grades K-1 have started off the year discussing book care and understanding how to be a reader. We’ve discussed how to treat our books and make sure we tell the truth if they get damaged. In addition to that we have enjoyed read alouds as we practice being a good reader who listens. Such titles your student may have enjoyed is Don’t Trust Fish, The Day the Books Disappeared, and Little Rabbit is not Lost. Kindergarten has now moved on to an author study of Gail Gibbons. We are looking at her Apple and Pumpkin books to learn more and to welcome fall. 2nd graders looked at the story This Very Tree and how it is from the perspective of tree and is still a non-fiction text since it talks about historical events.
All students have been learning that being a reader is finding out what works for them. Do they like non-fiction texts, or graphic novels? My goal is to help them understand that they can read for fun on their own terms. They are learning how to find books on our Destiny Discover platform for the library catalog and taking the time to explore what books we have to check out.
A huge thank you to our PTA and all the help they provide. Through their work and support during our bookfairs, I have been able to place more orders for books that the kids are looking for to keep their passion for reading going strong. Thank you PTA and Book fair volunteers. If you would like to volunteer in the media center to help shelf books or do book repairs feel free to reach out to walkerch@gjps.org and let me know.
Questions to ask your student:
How do you see yourself as a reader? (Do you love reading a lot, or do you need motivation to read)
What has been a favorite book you’ve checked out this year? (bonus points if you discuss with your student what your favorite books as a kid were too)
