Dear District 67 Families:

At yesterday's Board of Education meeting, I shared the preliminary results from the 2023 Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) which highlight achievement over the 2022-2023 school year. We continue to put a laser focus on academic performance through our new strategic plan and we have seen growth in every area for all grade levels across English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.

I have included a snapshot of the scores below. We continue to track progress and this data reflects the change from just the first and most basic steps taken to continue to improve student achievement levels. The growth that we have seen in ELA comes even before the introduction of the new Amplify ELA curriculum for grades K-8 after initial conversations and tweaks were made. We are eager to continue this progress and show growth in all areas for this 2023-2024 school year. I would like to sincerely thank our District 67 faculty, staff, and administrators for their steadfast work and commitment to professional development, contributing to this growth.

I encourage you to tune into the October Board of Education for a more in-depth report in advance of the October release of the Illinois State Report Card.

Sincerely,

We are excited to invite you to help host the Great FULL Market, a free family event for families affiliated with Beacon Place in Waukegan. This event includes a free fresh produce market, playing Lotería games, bracelet making, as well as enjoying churros and hot chocolate. This is the third year the event will be held at Beacon Place and we need your support to make it a success!

We are currently seeking donors to help offset the cost of hosting balloon artists, providing free hot chocolate and churros, as well as funds to help provide personal hygiene products. All donations are tax-deductible and make a significant impact on the event we are able to create!

We are also seeking volunteers to help with various activities such as setup, cleanup, food distribution, crafts, and more. If you are interested in volunteering, please check this your school's Friday Newsletter

Anaphylaxis and Food Allergies Anaphylaxis and Food Allergies

School districts in Illinois are required by ISBE to update anaphylaxis and food allergy guidelines every three years. Last spring, we invited community members, staff, and administrators from District 67 and District 115 to participate on the Anaphylaxis and Food Allergies Response Plan Committee. Beginning in May and throughout the summer, a group of 20-30 met four times to review and revise the document with the goal of developing an anaphylaxis and food allergies response plan to promote safe learning environments and schools for all children.

The goal of Districts 67 & 115 Anaphylaxis and Food Allergies Response Plan Committee is to develop a comprehensive school plan which includes a safe educational environment for students with food allergies, to develop clear procedures if anaphylaxis occurs, and to provide awareness to all stakeholders. The Anaphylaxis and Food Allergies Response Plan has been created with the objective of striking a balance between the right and convenience of all students to eat what they like, and the allergic child’s right to relative health, safety, and social normalcy in the school setting.

Our approved snack list is linked here.

Our six week pilot will be ending on Friday, October 6th. We will be sending a survey to staff and families during the week of October 9th to gather feedback from multiple stakeholders to serve as a resource for determining next steps.

Upcoming Fan Events Featuring Michelle Icard

FAN's next sponsored in-person event will be split into two nights and feature Michelle Icard's book "Eight Setbacks that Can Make a Child a Success."

An invaluable playbook for anxious parents everywhere, "Eight Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success" by parenting expert Michelle Icard (FAN ’22), offers specific and unexpected advice about what to say, what not to say, and what to do to help children in eight categories of tense situations. Distilled from Icard’s decades of experience working with tweens, teenagers, and families, she underscores that there is always a chance for a child to gain new and stronger decision-making skills, and for the parent-child relationship to strengthen.
