4th Grade
February in the Classroom
This Month in the Classroom
In writing, we will continue to write responses with relevant details that demonstrate understanding of texts in short and long constructed responses including comparing and contrasting ideas across a variety of sources. In grammar, students will learn about irregular verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
For the month of February, in reading, we will be finishing module five and will start module six. For module six, our class will build knowledge about natural wonders, with a focus on the informational text genre. We will read texts and view videos about what makes Earth’s natural wonders exciting and unique.
In Social Studies we will complete Unit 4: Statehood and Conflict. In this unit, we will understand the challenges Texans faced during Reconstruction and how they met those challenges. Also, we will learn that Texas settlers and American Indians fought for control of the land and that the American Indians were moved to reservations. We will begin Unit 5: Social and Economic Development. We will read about how cattle ranching and the growth of railroads provided economic opportunities to Texans.
This month in science, students will be learning about predictable patterns that occur on Earth such as the water cycle, seasonal patterns, and moon phases. Students will begin by observing and creating a water cycle model to show condensation, evaporation, precipitation, collection and runoff. If you're afraid of the dark, be sure to grab a flashlight so you and your child can observe the appearance of the moon and how it changes each night. We hope your child gains a new appreciation for our planet this month as we explore these natural patterns on Earth.
This month in math we will be learning about all things geometry. We will be exploring the characteristics of different shapes including the types of lines and angles they possess. We will also complete our units of personal financial literacy and data analysis. We will learn about profit, types of expenses, and what we can do at a financial institution...a bank. In data analysis we will learn about collecting data in various forms and on various types of graphs.
