June Newsletter
2026
Letter from the Head of School
by Kara Lawler
Dear families,
June is always quiet here on campus, and it gives me time to reflect on the previous year and plan for the upcoming one. As I look back on the 2025-2026 school year, I look back in wonder, which was our word of the year. We have all shared so much over the past nine months, and the year has been nothing short of a wonder of its own.
Together, we have watched our girls grow in the best ways. I've marveled at the sisterhood here on campus, shown in all spaces and places, and highlighted in our new Sisters in Stewardship leadership initiative. Our girls know that two flowers can (and do) bloom at the same time, and they clap hard for one another in the classrooms, on the dance floor, on the stage, in the riding arenas, and on the sports fields. Not only have they grown as students, but they have also grown as humans in curiosity, empathy, and resilience. I'm so proud of them.
As I look toward the 2026-2027 school year, I am excited about the promise it brings. The word of the new school year is hope, which is something we believe in deeply here at Grier. Planning is already happening here on campus for year, and we look forward to new beginnings and celebration of traditions that make our community so special. Hope is in all things.
Thank you all for trusting us with your girls. I wish you a wonderful summer filled with the laughter of loved ones. Please continue to check your email for important school year updates.
My best,
Kara Lawler

“The Lake Isle of Innisfree”
By William Butler Yeats
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

Teacher Talk
by Anthony Lang, Dean of Faculty
The campus of Grier School is quiet, as teachers have begun their break along with the students. While there will be moments of rest and recuperation, faculty will also work on future plans, revise lessons, and prepare for new courses. Many faculty will help teach during Grier Summer Camp, and help welcome returning girls and introduce new campers to what Grier is. As summer begins and the weather finally looks like it will bring us some much needed sunshine and blue skies, the Grier faculty wish everyone a good break and also give that gentle reminder, don't forget about that summer Honors and AP homework!
Senior Class Rings
We are very excited to offer a senior class ring this year! The classic ring features a timeless design, very similar to the class rings our graduates had decades ago. Featuring a genuine jade center, the ring is set in antique gold. With "Grier School" around the bezel, the inside of the ring allows for custom engraving with your daughter's initials and class year. Our motto, Sana Mens in Corpore Sano, is also engraved inside. Please find the information attached with three options for the gold and your customization preferences. Josten's will handle the ordering and payment but reach out to Kara Lawler with any questions. Kara has sizers in her office if students would like to verify ring size.

Looking Ahead
Looking Ahead to the Class of 2027!
To the parents of the class of 2027:
Rising seniors and their families are asked to begin thinking about senior portraits and baby photos for use in the 2027 yearbook.
Families may submit up to three different portraits if they would like a different photograph used for yearbook, graduation, and Senior Spotlights. Student counsel officers MUST submit at least TWO portraits (one for the senior section of the yearbook and one for use on the student council page).
Portraits need to be up-and-down and not in landscape orientation. We prefer high quality photographs over cell phone images. Selfies will not be approved. You may use your own photographer for senior portraits. Our photography students also love to do portraits for their friends, and they are happy to do so if asked. You can also book Mrs. Fernandes for a senior portrait session as well (there is a fee for her services).
Senior portraits and baby photos can be submitted at the link below. Please use the student’s name in the name of the image and save it as a jpg, jpeg, heic, or png. Please do not send pdfs. We’d like to have these submissions by November 1.

Please, direct questions regarding senior portraits to Christine Fernandes at: cfernandes@grier.org
Yearbook
The Pineneedle is looking for sponsors to help with publication of next year’s yearbook as well as for archiving digital copies for all posterity.
Publication sponsorships are $300 and archive sponsorships are $150. Businesses, individuals, or families will be listed by name/logo in next year’s book.
Archive sponsors will be given choices of publication years left to be digitized, and their name will appear with that digital version of the yearbook as part of our permanent records.
If you are interested in making a donation to this effort, please contact our yearbook advisor, Christine Fernandes, at cfernandes@grier.org and she will relay all pertinent information to you.
Attention parents and family of the Class of 2027! It’s not too early to pre-order a senior ad for the next issue of our yearbook. Senior ads are a way for family members to share photos of their graduate and send them a letter of encouragement and congratulations. We’d like to be able to feature as many senior ads as possible, but to do so, we need to know early how many pages to reserve.
The deadline to place an order for a senior ad is November 1 and the deadline for submitting ads (if we are not designing them for you) is December 1.
SENIOR AD PRICING:
Full Page: $200 | Half Page: $125 | Design Fee: $50 (or send us a Canva link of your self-designed ad)
To pre-order a senior ad, please contact our yearbook advisor, Christine Fernandes, at cfernandes@grier.org

STEM Center Stage
by Dr. Nancy Burke, Director of STEM Education and Science Dept. Chair
As the final month in the scholastic year, May was no exception to the many exciting STEM activities happening at Grier School. During our underclassmen awards ceremony 18 members of our chapter of the National STEM Honor Society (NSTEMHS) were recognized. I’d like to especially acknowledge two graduating seniors, Zara Dowadu and Cachen Chu, who were founding members of our chapter and had maintained membership for three years. Thank you ladies, for your years of hard work and dedication. Other graduating senior members include Yanrui Qu, Lucy Buchanan, Lucy Hanlon, Josie Filan, Hyunseo Back, Emily Ding, Emily Nie, and Cassidy Hunter. Returning and new members include, Olympia Rock, Zoe Skiadas, Scarlett Toth, Samantha Cates, Mengxi Yu, Kaylie McCabe, Beatrix Freidman, and Amalys Zahrouni. The purpose of the of the STEM Honor Society is to inspire student participation in science, technology, engineering, and math (“STEM”) disciplines and activities; to provide recognition of student achievement in STEM and to promote, encourage, and build a culture of STEM awareness at Grier school. Our school chapter maintains rigorous standards for acceptance into NSTEMHS, including a minimum grade of 88 in all STEM courses, a minimum of 3 STEM related courses per semester, and a minimum of 120 hours of STEM related extracurricular activities per year. I am so proud of our new and returning members, and look forward to another great year of working together.
In the month of May two Grier students participated in the statewide Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) competition held at Pennsylvania State University. Alexandra Cohen-Anderson, a ninth grader, received a second award for her project examining the effect of time pressure on test performance. Olympia Rock, a junior, received a first award and perfect score for her project studying the effect of pH on the formation of biofilms by oral bacteria. In addition to these awards, Olympia also received an award for excellence in microbiology as well as a $2000 scholarship, if she should choose to attend Pennsylvania State University.
To close out the school year our NSTEMHS students hosted our third annual school-wide STEM-bowl competition, complete with STEM themed foods like micro-chips and DNA (pretzel) twists. Questions in math, physics, chemistry, biology and technology were fielded by teams with members that included students ranging from our newly minted 5th and 6th grades to seniors, fun and laughter was shared by all.

College Counseling Updates
Congratulations to the class of 2026 on your recent graduation!!
In the next two weeks, final transcripts and paperwork will be sent to all seniors attending universities. If additional information is needed, please contact Ms. Barr and Mr. Shelton.
Juniors are encouraged to plan and attend college visits over the next three months. Use this time to explore and research your college list. Juniors should also be working on their personal statements for their college applications. When the rising seniors return in the fall, they will begin the application process in full. There will be weekly Sunday workshops and one-on-one meetings for each student. All seniors should be checking their emails at least once a week for information from the Dean of Academics and College Counseling Office.
Grier will once again be partnering with Paul Martin of College Money Method to provide financial aid workshops for families during the 2026-2027 school year. These webinars will be sent out as they occur. All upper classmen's families are encouraged to attend.
