Blazer Bulletin for Jan 8-12

Dear Trail Blazer Community
Second Semester Begins: Tuesday January 9th (A Day)
Semester Grades and Course Credit
A student at any grade level enrolled in a high school course will earn credit for the course only if the final grade is 70 or above. For a two-part (two-semester, 1-credit course), the student’s grades from both halves (semesters) will be averaged and credit will be awarded if the combined average is 70 or above. If the student’s combined average is less than 70, the student will be awarded credit only for the half (semester) with the passing grade.
Course Registration for 2024-2025 School Year
Please see email from FISD Communications regarding February 19, 2024 deadline for course request changes: [sent on 12/19 from communications@friscoisd.org]
Frisco ISD families,
As you know, we are in the middle of the course selection process for the 2024-25 school year.
The latest: Middle and high school course requests will be accepted until Feb. 19, 2024.
After Feb. 19, only changes for programs or any application/audition-based courses will be allowed. The process for submitting any allowed course request changes (per the middle and high school academic guide) will be communicated by each campus at a later date.
Context: FISD wants to have the correct staff in place for the courses students have selected.
In the past, students have been able to make changes through April.
The late changes created and dissolved class sections, wreaking havoc on the campus hiring process and master schedule.
Dig deeper: Explore FISD course offerings.
Watch a video to learn how to explore the course catalog.
Explore the Student Opportunity Model and how it differentiates FISD from neighboring districts.
Watch the campus newsletter for information from counselors regarding course selection activities and meetings scheduled for students and parents. As always, your campus counselor is ready to support you in selecting courses that meet your students' needs.
Attention 10th Graders
The UNT North Texas Now! program involves students taking a half-day of dual credit classes at the UNT campus in Frisco and then spending the remainder of the day at the home campus. The program is a collaborative, 2-year, interdisciplinary, project-based learning experience designed to allow students to see the relevance of course content as they apply it to solve real-world problems. Students can only begin the program at the start of their Junior year.
Frisco ISD and University of North Texas staff members will be hosting an informational webinars about the UNT Now! dual credit program. Details covered in the webinar include program expectations, tuition discounts, college and high school credits earned, and much more!

Reminders
Increased Consequences for Leaving Campus
Please note that Lebanon Trail remains a closed campus and students who leave campus during the day will now receive a Thursday Night Detention. Multiple offenses could result in tiered consequences, including ISS and Parent Conference. Please speak with your students about the importance of remaining on campus during school hours.
Student Absences - Requesting Advance Work
FISD policy does not permit students to 'work ahead' or to get missed work from teachers prior to the planned absences. Students who remain enrolled, will receive the grade earned, and upon return can work with teachers to get missing work submitted within a reasonable time frame and teachers can then submit a grade change form if applicable. It is the student’s responsibility to meet with the teacher and turn in missing work or make up missed assessments upon return to campus.
Attendance and Course Credit
To receive credit or a final grade in a class, a student must attend the class at least 90 percent of the days it is offered. A student who attends at least 75 percent but fewer than 90 percent of the days may receive credit or a final grade if he or she completes a plan, approved by the principal, that allows the student to fulfill the class’s instructional requirements.
If a student attends fewer than 75 percent of the class days or does not complete the principal-approved plan, then the attendance review committee will determine whether there are extenuating circumstances for the absences and how the student can regain credit or a final grade.
With the exception of absences due to serious or life-threatening illness or related treatment, all absences, excused or unexcused, may be held against a student’s attendance requirement.
