Principal's Message Principal's Message

Good evening, BGHS!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend as we roll into the last few weeks of April! We are entering a busy season of state and Advanced Placement Testing, and I'd like to ask for your help. If you are a parent, please know that state testing doesn't define your child. It helps us a a school system know how our kids compare across the state, and we use that measure as one data point for our instructional improvement. Students, I ask that you do your best. Although it may not feel like much is at stake, your effort is important. Your results show us what you learned and have yet to learn, and it is our responsibility to respond accordingly. Teachers, THANK YOU for all you have done to prepare our kids for their assessments. We know primarily students are placed in classes based on their age and ability, yet all students test based on their year in school. You have done the work to get us here, and I am thankful for your care, efforts, and energy.

Staff, students, and families, don't forget to take your CEE Survey! I believe in this school, our community, and know we are on the trajectory to greatness! Your feedback matters, and I promise to review every single result. BGHS is an incredible place to be, and it is my honor to serve here.

Have a fabulous week, Tigers.

Heather Ichimura, Proud Principal of BGHS

Old Business:

Next week, our sophomores will be completing their Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in their regularly scheduled ELA (English Language Arts) class. We will NOT be running a special schedule as done in years past. I believe nesting testing in the classroom setting provides a more "normal" experience, reduces testing anxiety, and allows us then to pull scores by teacher who can then quickly share (unofficial) results with their students. This marries the instructional and assessment experience, a more natural connection which as very little impact on school running as normal.

This week, juniors will take their WA-CAS (Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science) in the library based on their last name. We will be testing in the library and students will return to their regularly scheduled classes. We are unable to test by science class this year, as classes are not run by grade level (something we are working on in the future).

Please encourage your student to eat breakfast, get a good night's rest, and do their best. While a test score does not define a person, these scores are the most public measure of learning and we want our results to represent what a student has learned and can do.

Remember to take our CEE Survey!! The link is in your email :) Understanding the perspectives of the people who make up Battle Ground Public Schools is important as we continue working toward improvement. This month, you and your family have an opportunity to share their thoughts in an optional survey administered by the Center for Educational Effectiveness. All parents and guardians will receive the survey via email on April 8. Students in fifth through 12th grades also will receive the survey, unless a parent or guardian opted them out in the annual student update. The surveys will close on May 2. Learn more. Your feedback matters greatly to us, and I can assure you we will review what you share as a leadership team, and as a school community, to improve our practices. Please share your thoughts!

As you may know, Battle Ground’s Board of Directors voted to rerun the replacement education

and operations levy in the April 22 special election. The current education and operations levy will expire after 2025.

How the levy affects Battle Ground High School (BALLOTS ARE DUE TUESDAY)

If approved, the replacement levy would continue to fund the following at our school:

  • Our Dean of Students (Mr. Jamal McKenzie)
  • Campus Security
  • C-Team Sports
  • Advanced Placement Classes that are run below the normal class size
  • Prevention/Intervention Specialists (Mrs. Jessica McGowen and Mrs. Amy Warnke)
  • School Librarian (Mrs. Kelly Bridden)
  • School Counselors (8 counselors will be cut and we have three with the lowest seniority - Mrs. Lexie Groves, Mr. Zach Williams, and Mr. Nick Santilli)
  • Crossing Guards
  • And SO MUCH MORE

How you can learn more: Please consider attending a presentation next month. These presentations are an opportunity to learn about what the levy pays for and next steps if it were to fail a second time. There is one presentation left for you to join- April 16, at 530pm at Prairie High School, 11311 NE 119th St., Vancouver. Childcare and light refreshments will be provided. Can’t make it to the presentation? Here is a short informational video about the levy. You can also find more information, including FAQs and a calculator, on the district’s website. You should receive your ballot between April 1 and April 4. The deadline to vote is 8 p.m. on April 22.If you have any questions, please let me know. I am happy to discuss in more detail.

Thank you,

Heather Ichimura, Proud Principal of BGHS

Report, don’t repost

If you see or hear of a possible threat, please report it to law enforcement directly and/or to school staff. This is the best and most helpful action because it begins an investigation and helps to limit the potential for misinformation to spread. Reposting or sharing a threat on social media in an attempt to warn others spreads the threat farther from its original source and may cause unnecessary alarm and fear.
