We Enjoyed A Fabulous Team Day!
We celebrated all the hard work in Term 1 the students put in. We gave Student of the Month Awards, we played Protect the Pizza, Balloon Bonanza and Rattle Relay. Students learned how to work together, support their teammates and how to get out of their comfort level a little bit and be involved. We watched Wild Robot, a heartwarming movie about family, friendship and overcoming diversity.
In the coming months, I'm looking the most forward to...
Trails Update
Your students have been practicing their self-awareness and self-management skills in the classroom and school. In our next unit, we’ll learn social awareness skills, which help us to more fully understand the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of others so that we can treat everyone with empathy and respect. At this age, social awareness means recognizing who you can ask for help in difficult situations, celebrating perspectives that are different from your own, and using empathy to build connections rather than judgments.

Our 8th Graders Are Mastering the Art of Storytelling!
This month, our talented writers have been diving deep into the world of creative fiction by crafting their own versions of "The Monkey's Paw" story. Watching them tackle this challenging project has been absolutely incredible!
The Challenge They're Taking On
Our students aren't just writing simple stories – they're becoming true storytellers by mastering complex writing elements that bring their tales to life. They're working hard to:
Master the Art of "Show, Don't Tell"
This is one of the biggest challenges in writing! Our students are learning to reveal story information through character actions, dialogue, and sensory details rather than simply stating facts.
Develop Rich Characters
Instead of just telling us "Sarah was nervous," our writers are showing character traits through meaningful dialogue, internal thoughts, and realistic reactions that make readers truly connect with their protagonists.
Create Vivid Settings -
By using the five senses and beautiful figurative language, students are painting pictures with words that transport readers directly into their story worlds. Descriptions such as, the creaking floorboards of an old house or the bitter wind whistling through bare trees, are bringing the setting to life and creating a distinct mood.
Craft Purposeful Dialogue
Every conversation in their stories serves a purpose – whether it's moving the plot forward, revealing character personalities, or building tension. They're also experimenting with varied dialogue tags that help bring their characters to life.
Literary Techniques in Action
Our young authors are incorporating sophisticated writing techniques like foreshadowing, symbolism, and metaphors to add depth to their stories. They're also playing with sentence structure – using short, choppy sentences during tense moments and longer, flowing sentences during calmer scenes.
In Summary
The dedication and growth I've witnessed in their writing has been truly remarkable.. Each student is pushing themselves to become a better storyteller, and their hard work is definitely paying off!
Next in our curriculum, we will be moving into Unit 2 of Studysync., which is titled “Past and Present.” In this unit, our students will discover what it means to be yourself, to make tough decisions, and even to feel on top of the world, using the lens of figurative language to understand how authors express varied ideas about identity and belonging, past and present.

ESL with Mrs. Guerrette
This Month in Foundational 1 ESL class
In Foundational 2 ESL class, students learned about figurative language and figuring out the meaning of idioms from the context. Students learned that an idiom is an expression whose meaning is different from the usual meanings of individual words.
They created a booklet My favorite Idiom with 10 idioms, their meanings, and images that illustrated meanings of idioms. ELL students enjoyed sharing their favorite idioms and using them daily. Nice work everyone!
Math with Mrs. Skorupski
What Homework?!?
What have students been learning about in Math 8 class?
Math 8 students continued the Module on Solving Equations. Students have solved Two-Step Equations and Multi-Step Equations with distributive property, like terms. Students have completed many group/partner activities including Multi-Step Equations Scavenger Hunt, Multi-Step Equations Error Analysis and Vertical whiteboard activities. We have begun solving Variables on Both Sides Equations and we have returned to note taking in the workbook. At times the equations may look challenging however as I explained to the students, if you break it down to small pieces it becomes easier. Part of making a more challenging problem easier is to show all the work step by step as they work through the problem. Students need to show all their work to earn full credit on problems.
Very Important Information:
First In Math - By the end of Trimester 2 (March 13th) students should have completed 2,000 stickers in total. Students should continue to get 100 stickers per week to maintain their goal at the end of the trimester .

Civics with Mr. Chapin
In Civics we are continuing our Civic Engagement in our Democracy curriculum being piloted by WMS this year, also known as the Democratic Knowledge Project or DKP. Heads up! Many students are beginning to realize that although this new curriculum might be lighter on the content load than a traditional textbook-based curriculum, it is more demanding in terms of critical thinking. Students are being asked to focus on a few key skills right now:
Paying attention: As simple as this sounds, we cannot emphasize enough the need to be paying attention in class.
Reading Directions: Again, a simple request, but students that are being successful in this new curriculum are carefully reading directions for lessons and activities and asking questions when they are confused.
Collaboration: DKP is a more social curriculum than a traditional textbook/worksheet set of lessons. Students are being asked to talk to and listen to each other, a valuable skill not just in school but outside of school as well.
Reading: NOTE: Although this is your Civics teacher writing, students are highly encouraged to have a high-interest (meaning they actually want to read it), and at-level (meaning it’s at a student’s reading level, lexile, or grade level) book in their possession that they can make some progress on as the school year goes along. Studies continue to show that students that do not read outside of school have more difficulty when it comes to reading and understanding in-school materials.
Grades and Extra Credit: Although not a “skill” per se, students are highly encouraged to watch their grade and assignments and aim for the highest score possible. This class offers unlimited extra credit throughout the term that students can take advantage of to bring their grade to any (even higher than 100) score they want to earn.
Where Are We? Students are currently engaged in a study of the Bill of Rights as part of our Unit 2: The Rights of the People. We will be focusing on Free Expression and the 1st Amendment, Search and Seizure and the 4th Amendment, and Due Process and the 5th Amendment. This Unit will culminate with a Rights Project that we should be beginning in the next few weeks (first weeks of December).
Wednesday Help: Students that need or want help in the class are encouraged to come by the classroom Wednesdays at lunch. Students can check with me to set up a time outside of this for any additional tutoring or support.
Science with Mr. Mullett
Welcome to Sci 81!
We are wrapping up the topic of U1 - Chem/Astro (Matter/Reactions), which will have us blending both a Layered Curriculum (independent) as well as OpenSciEd (collaborative) to help students achieve a fair balance of responsibility to themselves as well as to the classes. The next topic is U2 - Chem (Endo/Exothermic) which has us working with MREs, Handwarmers, and Salty Ice Cream. All along, students are reminded and reflect on all various forms of Chemical reactions, which delves into matter breaking down into smaller and smaller parts (Molecules→Atoms) and then rearranging into new matter. During this time we are also applying our new knowledge towards the effects of Chemicals in our Community/Globe.

WMS Library News from Mrs. Scott
We know that many students are trying to log in with their school email at home or on cell phones to access Google Classroom, their email, Clever, etc. Due to heightened security in the district, the Technology Department has required anyone signing into a school email account or trying to access school accounts not from a school issued device must have a 2 step Authorization (MFA) on any non-district device. We understand that it is an extra step, but it is decreasing numerous problems the district was having with regards to hacking into accounts.
Please use this link to follow these directions exactly. If you do not follow the 10 steps carefully, the log in will fail. Please take your time. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Scott at sarah.scott@schoolsofwestfield.org.
