Realizing the Dream Esssay and Art Contest
Senior McRoy Maxwell was selected as a 2026 Realizing the Dream Essay and Art Contest winner! His artwork will be exhibited in the Cadence Bank Art Gallery at Shelton State Community College from Monday, March 23–Monday, April 6. The Realizing the Dream Committee sponsors an annual essay and art contest for students in grades 6-12 around a changing theme centered around the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. The theme for 2026 is Realizing the Dream Through Faith and Action.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Realizing the Dream Committee, comprised of representatives from Stillman College, Shelton State Community College, Tuscaloosa’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference and The University of Alabama, exists to raise consciousness about injustice and promote human equality, peace and social justice by creating educational and cultural opportunities for growth, empowerment and social change so that every person may experience the bounty of life’s abundant possibilities.
We are very proud of McRoy and this opportunity and honor. He will be recognized at a closing reception on Thursday, April 2, from 6:00–7:00 p.m. announcing the winners and celebrating their hard work.

HTHS Engineering Academy
Two teams from the HTHS Engineering Academy presented their final designs to a team of NASA engineers on Thursday. The team of Nicholas Davis and Syed Abidi designed a zero-gravity hygiene system to be utilized in space by astronauts. A typical shower is not an option in a zero-gravity environment because the water would break up and then could be inhaled by the astronauts. The team of Grayson Benzaia, Liam McGinnis, and Nathan Mullinax designed a robot that would be utilized by astronauts on the moon and Mars. The robot would jump high into the low gravity atmosphere and take aerial photos to help with astronaut exploration and navigation. The teams will be notified soon to see if they are invited to Houston to present their ideas to NASA scientists, engineers, and astronauts.
