What We're Learning
Math
We will learn how to represent 3-digit numbers using base-ten blocks, drawings, and numbers. We will practice reading, writing, and expanding numbers through 999 and learn how to compose and decompose 3-digit numbers in different ways. We will explain the value of each digit based on its place value. We will also practice locating 2-digit numbers on a number line and explaining their relationship to other numbers.
Reading
We will learn how to identify and explain the central idea and supporting details in an informational text. We will use what we know about story elements, sequence, central idea, and supporting details to demonstrate our understanding on a reading assessment. We will also practice identifying the author’s purpose and determining whether the author’s purpose is to answer, explain, or describe.
Weekly Spelling Pattern
We will have a SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK!
This week, we will learn how to read and spell words that follow the FLOSS Rule. We will learn that in many one-syllable words, the final /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/ sound is doubled after a short vowel (for example, cliff, hill, and pass). We will practice reading and spelling these words by recognizing and using word chunks to help us decode and spell accurately.
Writing
We will brainstorm ideas for our personal narratives using a story map. Throughout the week, we will begin drafting our stories by developing a clear beginning, middle, and end.
.
Science
We will learn how systems work and describe how their parts work together to perform a function. We will explore how scientists use systems to understand and explain how different parts work together. We will identify the parts of a system and explain how they work together to make the system function.
Homework
Spelling
- Please note: This year, 2nd grade teachers will be sending home examples of words to practice, not a list to memorize. Interested in why we are making this shift?
- Click HERE to find out!
Math
- We will begin sending home weekly math review sheets beginning after Labor Day. These do not have any bearing on the overall math grade, but will help your child review concepts so that they stay fresh in their minds.
Reading
- Reading every night is imperative to your child's success in 2nd grade. Your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes every night.
Attendance Information
Attendance Matters!
- Students will only be allowed 10 total absences. Greenville County states that students must be present 170 of 180 days. This can be combination of parent notes, or unexcused absences. A student will be considered TRUANT with 3 consecutive unexcused absences, or 5 total unexcused absences. Chronic absences and tardiness can affect the entire classroom, disrupting the flow of learning. Attending school REGULARLY and ON TIME creates a positive environment for everyone! If a student misses more than 10 days, all additional absences must be medical or principal approved to be classified as an excused absence. We are no longer able to accept text messages or class app messages. Attendance must be communicated through email to your child's teacher, email to Mrs. Rogers, or a physical note in your child's red folder.
Student/Parent Backpack
A backpack for parents account provides parents, guardians, or contacts with a central place to sign in to do the following:
- View their student's information including demographics, attendance, classes, grades, lunch balances, and test scores
- Apply or register their student to Special Focus schools and programs (Fine Arts Center, Career Centers, etc.)
- Receive alerts and notifications regarding their students
- View their student's school and contact information
- Manage parent and contact information for their students

Water Bottle Reminders
Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school each day. With the warm temperatures, we want to make sure all of our little ones stay cool and hydrated throughout the day!
If possible, we prefer water bottles with a straw, as they are easier for students to use throughout the school day.
Please remember that students should have ONLY WATER in their water bottles. 💧
Thank you for helping us keep our students hydrated! 😊
Breakfast and Lunch Updates
Visitors at LUNCH
As we begin our school year, we ask that you wait to join your child for lunch until
after Labor Day so that we have time to put all of our routines/procedures in place. Students are not allowed to have 'friends' eat with them and their parent. ONLY parents/child are allowed to eat together during this visitation lunch time.
Breakfast and Lunch Menus
Woodland will be providing free breakfast and lunch to all students again this school year! Please see below for the breakfast and lunch menus for the month.
