Weekly Devotion
“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
You ever notice how much of your life is spent making plans? Your career - The next house - The trip next summer - The way this year is supposed to go. We map it all out in our heads like we’ve got the whole thing figured out. We plan the course. God sets the actual steps. That’s how it works.
Most of us hear that and feel two things at once. Relief, and a little nervous. Relief because it means we’re not ultimately in control of outcomes we can’t control anyway. Nervous, because it means our carefully drawn plan might get rewritten.
God’s not trying to mess up your plans. He’s establishing the steps that actually get you where He wants you. Sometimes those steps line up with what you sketched out. Sometimes they don’t. Either way, He’s the one who knows the future you can’t see yet.
You can plan a perfect route and still hit a detour. A door you were sure would open stays shut while another one you never saw cracks open. In the moment it can feel like the plan failed. What actually happened is the Lord established the next step.
The good news is that your faithfulness doesn’t depend on everything going the way you pictured it. You still plan. You still work hard. You still pray and prepare and take responsibility. But you hold the plan with open hands because the One who established the steps of Jesus all the way to the cross is the same One establishing yours.
Jesus planned nothing the way the world expected. No throne in Jerusalem the way they wanted it. No army. No political takeover. The Father established the steps all the way through betrayal, a cross, and an empty tomb. And that path is what saved us.
So plan your way. Make the wise choices. Do the next right thing in front of you. Then trust that the Lord is establishing the steps, even the ones that surprise you. He’s not reacting to your plan. He’s writing a better one.
Prayer
Father, thank You that my plans don’t have the final word. Help me plan wisely and trust You fully as You establish every step. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
In Christ,
Pastor Schneider
