Nearly 70 students participated in our Summer Reading Program by reading at least 8 books over summer break! These students demonstrated a love for reading and a commitment to keeping their minds active throughout the summer months. A special congratulations goes to our top reader, Stella Causey, who read an incredible 53 books!

To celebrate their accomplishments, participating students were rewarded with a candy bar. As an additional reward, these students are also allowed to check out one extra book during each library visit.

As we reach the halfway point of the first nine weeks, we encourage all students to continue working toward their quarterly reading goal of 1,000 pages! Students who read 1,000 pages by the end of the first quarter on Friday, October 23, will receive a certificate and a prize for reaching their goal. Beginning Monday, October 26, students will start working toward their second-quarter goal of reading another 1,000 pages.

We are so proud of our students for making reading a priority and continuing to show their GSFE Greatness! Keep reading, Trojans!

GSFE Greatness: Check Out the Parent Resource Center GSFE Greatness: Check Out the Parent Resource Center

As part of our #RiseWithReading initiative, our Library is excited to offer a Parent Resource Center filled with decodable texts published by HMH.

The books are organized by grade level and selected to support the reading skills and vocabulary students are learning at school. This makes it easier for families to find books that are just right for their child’s current stage of reading development.

Our goal is to give families access to books that can help children practice reading skills, build confidence, and develop a love of reading at home. Books from the Parent Resource Center are available for families to check out and enjoy together. There are also games available for checkout that reinforce reading and vocabulary skills as students play.

If you are interested in additional reading materials for your child, we encourage you to visit the Parent Resource Center in our Library. We are happy to help you find books or activities that are a good fit for your child.

Whether your child is just beginning to read or is building more advanced vocabulary and word skills, we want to help you find resources that make reading at home fun, meaningful, and successful.

Stop by the Parent Resource Center and discover books that can help your child #RiseWithReading!

We celebrated International Literacy Day with our friends from Green Sea Floyds Middle School! Middle school students joined our House Buddy groups and spent time reading with and supporting our Little Trojans. We especially love seeing our former elementary students return to serve as mentors and role models. Partnerships like this strengthen the connection across our schools and bring our vision of Greatness, Service, and Family to life.

We invite our families to join us for Biscuits and Books with Parents! This special morning is an opportunity to enjoy breakfast with your child while learning more about how you can support his or her academic growth at home.

During the event, parents will receive their child’s i-Ready Reading and Math reports and learn more about their child’s current progress in both areas. We will help families understand the information in these reports and discuss simple, practical strategies that can be used at home to strengthen reading and math skills.

While you are here, be sure to visit our Book Fair! Families will have an opportunity to shop together and help students find books they are excited to read. Choosing books that interest your child is a great way to encourage reading at home and build strong reading habits.

Green Sea Floyds Elementary is excited to partner with United Way of Horry County to host Ready, Set, Kindergarten!, a free program specifically designed for children who will enter kindergarten in Fall 2027.

This program is not for students who are currently enrolled in kindergarten. It is an opportunity for our future kindergarteners and their families to get a head start on the transition to school by experiencing the kindergarten environment before their first official day.

During each session, rising kindergarteners will have the opportunity to visit an actual kindergarten classroom, meet a kindergarten teacher, and learn what a typical first day of school will look and feel like. These early experiences can help children become more familiar and comfortable with the school setting while building excitement and confidence about beginning kindergarten.

Parents and caregivers will also receive practical resources to help prepare their child for school. Families will receive a Kindergarten Readiness Checklist and simple activities they can practice together at home. Parents will also learn more about what children need to know and be able to do as they prepare for kindergarten.

Who should attend? Any child who will be starting kindergarten for the first time in Fall 2027 and their parent or caregiver. Your child does not have to be zoned for or planning to attend Green Sea Floyds Elementary. The program is open to rising kindergarteners throughout Horry County, and families may attend the location that is most convenient for them.

All sessions begin at 9:00 AM and last approximately 45–60 minutes.
