Walled Lake Central equestrian team advances to MIHA Regional Championships
The Walled Lake Central equestrian team held off rival Walled Lake Western this weekend to finish the district meet as the Division 1, Division C Reserved Champions.
“I am so proud of our team for working hard and being able to make it to regionals,” said senior captain Addison Kade. “Walled Lake Western gave us a run for our money and it was a very close intense race for second place.”
The Vikings are making their 3rd-straight trip to the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association Regional Championships this weekend at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds. The opening ceremonies are on Friday, September 29, with competition running on Saturday and Sunday.
“We are so excited and thankful for our opportunity to be able to go to regionals,” said Kade. “We know it’s going to be a fun-filled weekend and we hope to place well.”
“We’ve added two new students to our team this year, Aliyah Patton and Madelyn Pavuk, bringing us up to a total of four riders,” said head coach Amy Willis. “Both new teammates did great this season considering it was their first year on the team.”
“Our two returning riders, Addison Kade and Siena Spitzig, were able to take on new classes this year,” added Willis. “All four riders worked incredibly hard and were able to contribute to our second-place win in our division and take us on to regionals.”
While her teammates compete in Division C, Pavuk will be in the saddle in the new Equines with Disabilities (EDW) Division. EDW is a pilot program this year, which allows riders with disabilities to compete along with their peers on the school's team against riders with similar abilities. Pavuk has shined in her first year competing winning the EDW district championship. She is assisted by her father, Greg, when she competes in her four events: Western Fitting and Show, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Equitation, and the speed event Clover.
Walled Lake Central’s Joe Bell named a finalist for MASSP's 2024 AP of the Year
The Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) named Walled Lake Central’s Joe Bell one of four finalists for its 2024 Assistant Principal of the Year Award.
“It is the highest sort of honor to be recognized by your peers; especially for doing a job that you care about so much,” said Bell. “Being selected as a finalist is a privilege; I truly appreciate all the kind words of encouragement from our staff at Walled Lake Central.”
Bell is in his sixth year serving as one of Walled Lake Central’s assistant principals. He’s been an administrator in Walled Lake Consolidated Schools since 2005, when he started as an assistant principal at James R. Geisler Middle School. Bell then moved to Walled Lake Western, where he was an assistant principal for three years and principal for eight years before taking the assistant principal position at Walled Lake Central.
“Mr. Bell brings a wealth of experience as well as passion to the job,” said Walled Lake Central principal Kyle Meteyer. “He cares deeply about students and our school, which is evident in his daily interactions, high levels of integrity, and meticulous oversight of myriad programs and events. There is no doubt Mr. Bell makes Walled Lake Central a better school for everyone!”
The MASSP will surprise its Assistant Principal of the Year winner and honor them at its annual EdCon Conference June 24-26, 2024 in Traverse City. The other 2024 Assistant Principal of the Year Award finalists are Melissa Curth (Troy High School), Lauren Kazin (Cass Technical High School), and Jessica Lupone (Bloomfield Hills High School).

Walled Lake Western beats out weather and rival Central on Wednesday
The Walled Lake Western girls' golf team improved to 3-3 in the Lakes Valley Conference on Wednesday afternoon with a 14 stroke victory over rival Walled Lake Central at Edgewood Country Club. The Warriors and Vikings both beat out the tough weather conditions as a consistent rain started to come down as they teed off on the second hole. Western senior Graci Sauve shot the low round of the day with a 51, while freshman Allyson Adams led the Vikings shooting a round of 54.

LAYA thanks supporters
Lakes Area Youth Assistance (LAYA) held another successful Taste of the Lakes event on Sept. 19, 2023 at Edgewood Country Club. A special thank you to all those who made the event a success, including local restaurants, businesses and District Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) for their generous donations and, of course, all those who attended the 2023 event.
LAYA is a prevention program whose mission is to strengthen our youth and families by preventing and reducing child abuse, neglect and delinquency through community involvement.
Ellen Demray, chairperson of the event noted the event was a memorable evening and a huge success raising over $23,000. She said, “Because of this event, LAYA will be able to support many programs for at-risk students during the school year and next summer. If you know a Walled Lake Schools student that may benefit from LAYA services, please reach out to your child’s counselor or principal.” The 2024 event will be September 17.

COVID Policy Update - 2023-24
As you know, the Federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency has ended and all remaining state epidemic orders have been rescinded. This, however, does not change the recommendation to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as isolation and masks. The expectation is that students, families, and staff will follow the recommended guidelines regarding COVID-19. With that said, at this time, for the 2023-24 school year, COVID-19 positive cases will no longer be monitored at the District level and timelines will not be provided. Please see below for recommendations should your student test positive for COVID-19:
- Stay home, separate from others, and follow the recommended guidance from your physician, the Centers for Disease Control, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and/or the Oakland County Health Division.
- Report absence to the school secretary.
- Questions or concerns should be directed to your physician or the Oakland County Nurse On Call Line at 800-848-5533.
Thank you for keeping the health and safety of our students and staff a priority in Walled Lake Schools.
