The story follows a young girl who joins a traveling circus and finds herself immersed in a world of murder and mayhem. The story has a diverse cast of colorful characters and includes parallels to famous stories like Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz as well as references to the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe. Biomedical Science Innovation Pathway
On May 9th, students from our Biomedical Science Innovation Pathway participated in the Massachusetts Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Showcase, sponsored by One8 Applied Learning. Representing the courses Principles of Biomedical Science, Medical Interventions, and Biomedical Innovations, students presented their research-based projects to industry professionals from the biotech and medical fields. Highlights included an app called Outbreak, developed to track and identify emerging diseases, and a proposed breast cancer treatment combining quantum dots and immunotherapy. Four senior groups from the Biomedical Innovations showcased advanced capstone projects on male birth control, a portable dialysis device, improved medical adhesives, and innovations in drug administration. Congratulations to all of our student presenters!
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Advocacy Action Day
From Mrs. Hicks, mother of (Senior) Brianna Hicks:
We introduced ourselves to the American Federation for Suicide Prevention individuals at the MA State House, and we learned that one of the key members works at Westfield State University where Brianna will be attending this fall. She shared information with Brianna, and they look forward to working together to reinstate a Mental Health/Suicide Prevention Walk that used to occur at the college. Brianna and I, along with an additional advocate, met with 3 different Representatives' aides. Brianna shared her experience with losing her friend and classmate, Sarah Arnold, and she also talked about the state budget and several other bills that are coming forward related to suicide prevention. Brianna discussed the survey she completed at school as well as the H 640 Jason Flatt Act. In addition, we did play tourist just a bit. One picture below is the Hall of Flags where the 351 Towns and Cities of Massachusetts provided their flag to hang, including Charlton, of course! Brianna and I also went into the House Gallery while in session and were able to see a speaker make his inaugural speech on an amendment to bill H 400 and watch the voting on said bill. It was a great day of civic engagement!
GSA participated in our Clubapalozza
Students from clubs including the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) participated in the school's first ever Clubapalozza held by the Shepherd Hill Cultural Coordinating Committee under the direction of Mr. Simoes! Six of the school's clubs participated, coming together to provide food, games, a thrift store and more!
Thank You from NHS
The National Honor Society wants to thank all members of the Dudley-Charlton educational community who participated in our Hygiene Drive for Abby's House in March for Women's History Month. A large majority of our donations came from our Kids Night Out event in March, and we want to thank everyone who attended for their generosity! Additionally, we collected items in each of the seven school buildings. This was a very successful endeavor, led by senior NHS secretary, Lily Durda and her Outreach Committee. We were able to collect and drop off over $800 worth of supplies to Abby's House, and they were very grateful for the donation. Thank you all for helping us with a great charity event this Spring!
