Superintendent's Update

October 9, 2026

Superintendent'sUpdateOctober 9, 2026

Dear CCPS Families,

We have so much to celebrate and look forward to across Cecil County Public Schools.

First, I want to share that our recent College and Career Fair held at Bohemia Manor High School on October 6 was a resounding success. The event hosted 90 representatives spanning colleges, universities, technical schools, military branches, apprenticeship programs, and local businesses, giving our students invaluable insights into their future pathways. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who organized and participated in making this event such an impactful opportunity for our students.

Tonight marks the Maryland Teacher of the Year Gala, and while our very own CCPS Teacher of the Year was not selected as one of the top seven state finalists, we could not be more proud. K. Nicole Walker, a dedicated science teacher at Elkton High School, has done an incredible job for our school system and continues to represent the absolute best of CCPS education through her commitment and passion for her students every single day.

Looking ahead at our calendar, please note two important awareness days later this month: we will celebrate Unity Day on Wednesday, October 21 (don't forget to wear orange) and hold our annual Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness on Friday, October 23. Additionally, as a quick reminder for families, Friday, October 16 will be a Professional Day, and schools will be closed to students.

Finally, as October is National Principals Month, I want to express my deep gratitude to all of our dedicated principals. Thank you for your tireless leadership, guidance, and unwavering support for our school communities.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey A. Lawson, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools

Last spring, Cecil County Public Schools began updating and verifying student contact records in PowerSchool to ensure that individuals listed as "Contact 2" have educational rights for their students.

Starting next week, CCPS is expanding automated communications to include these additional legal guardians (Contact 2/Guardian 2). Here is what you can expect:

  • Attendance Notifications: Automated attendance calls will now automatically be sent to both Contact 1 and Contact 2 listed in PowerSchool. No action is needed on your part.

  • Progress Reports & Interims: Beginning with the upcoming M1 Interims, report cards and interim updates sent via School Messenger will now be delivered to both Guardian 1 and Guardian 2.

If you need to update or verify the contacts listed for your student, please reach out directly to your school’s main office.

If your family qualified for Free & Reduced-Price Meal Benefits last school year, you must submit a new application for the current school year by Monday, October 12 to continue receiving benefits.

If a new application is not submitted by this date, your meal benefits will expire, and your student will be moved to full-pay meal status.

We encourage all families to complete an application, even if you do not believe you qualify. The application process is 100% confidential, and no information is shared with any outside agencies.

To apply, please visit: https://www.myschoolapps.com/Application

If you received a letter from the Food & Nutrition office that stated that your family has been approved for free meals this school year then there is NO need to fill out the application.

If you have any questions regarding meal benefits, please contact the Food & Nutrition Department at 410-996-6257.

Important School Immunization Requirements for CCPS Families

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, Cecil County Public Schools (CCPS) reminds all families to ensure their students' immunization records are completely up to date before the first day of school.

Elementary School Requirements (Grades K–5)

Under Maryland law, all elementary students must have proof of the following standard immunizations:

  • DTaP / DTP / DT: 4–5 doses

  • Polio: 3–4 doses

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 doses

  • Varicella (Chickenpox): 2 doses

  • Hepatitis B: 3 doses

Incoming 7th Grade Families — Action Required

Maryland state law requires all students entering 7th grade to have proof of two specific updated boosters before school begins:

  • Tdap booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)

  • Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4)

Need an Appointment?

We recommend contacting your child’s primary care physician as soon as possible to review their records and schedule any needed shots.

If you need an alternative, the Cecil County Health Department offers required school immunizations:

  • Clinics: Immunization clinics begin in August (by appointment).

  • Schedule: Call 410-996-5100 or check the attached flyer for details.
