A Word of Thanks!

As we move further into the school year, we want to take a moment to thank you for your ongoing commitment to student attendance. Your daily diligence in tracking, communicating with families, and following up on absences makes a significant impact on our students' academic success and overall well-being. We truly appreciate your continued awareness and proactive efforts in ensuring every student is present and ready to learn, especially as the busy holiday season approaches!"

New! Attendance Toolkits

The Communications team at the CDE has launched new monthly attendance communication toolkits for you to use at your discretion. Check out our October 2025 Attendance Toolkit overview and find the full October Attendance Toolkit (Google Drive) with materials in English and Spanish.

Absences typically increase right after the fall and winter holidays, when the weather turns cold and wet, and during spring as the school year ends. We have a variety of resources and suggestions for schools on our website to help students stay in school when absences spike. Find updated family letters to send before Thanksgiving and the December holiday near the bottom of our website page.

New Resources for Tier 2 Support and Effective Messaging

Excited to share new resources and key takeaways from the recent Chronic Absenteeism Peer Learning Network meeting. The discussion focused on enhancing Tier 2 communication, developing effective attendance messaging, and the critical need for consistency in our approach across elementary and secondary schools.

1. Chronic Absenteeism Peer Learning Network Highlights

The recent session centered on strengthening our systems and communications to reduce chronic absenteeism.

  • Focus on Consistency: A recurring theme in the Problem of Practice protocol was the critical need for consistency in applying attendance protocols, from data coding practices to family communication. Consistency ensures equity and clarity across the district.

  • Effective Tier 2 Messaging: Participants spent time reviewing how to communicate effectively with families when a student is beginning to show signs of chronic absence. The latest research on what messages resonate with parents is captured in the resources below.

  • Data and Coding Practices: A conversation began on improving data accuracy and coding practices to ensure intervention efforts are targeted and based on reliable information.

You can find the slides from our recent session, which contain further details on the protocol and discussions, here

2. New Resources for Attendance Messaging and Toolkit

School teams should review and refine their Tier 2 communication and overall attendance strategy using these new resources:

A. Mastering Your Attendance Messaging: The Whole-Child Approach

The Ad Council Research Institute (ACRI) study on attendance messaging highlights the need to shift from punitive language to a positive, supportive, and holistic focus. The Attendance Messaging Lens — Peer Feedback Rubric is an excellent tool to evaluate your school’s current communications.

Tone & Emotion: Keep it positive, supportive, and non-punitive.Avoid messages that chastise or focus on consequences; instead, sound like "We’re here to help".

Focus on the Whole Child: Emphasize the benefits of attendance, including social, emotional, and academic growth. Use phrases like "develop their whole selves—personally, socially, academically, and emotionally".

Trusted Messenger: Parents trust their child's teacher most. Ensure communications are signed or sent by a known teacher or counselor, as this is more impactful than a generic office email.

Realistic Goal: Replace perfection with progress ("as much as possible"). The goal should be attainable and kind, focusing on working together to improve attendance.
