Building Resilience In Our Children Building Resilience In Our Children

There is a term we use quite often at Providence Hall Elementary that may resonate well with many of you; it's a term that describes the importance of a healthy amount of difficulty that is key to growth. The term is "Productive Struggle".

In any life context it's clear that improvement comes through the learning and use of new skills or knowledge, which can often be uncomfortable. Some children are naturally more willing to be uncomfortable, while others tend to exert a level of resistance to discomfort.

What is the recipe for resilience? In a publication from the Center on the Developing Child from Harvard University, we learn that resilience is the outcome of the right balance of protective experience and adaptive skills on the one hand and significant adversity on the other.

How much of each of these a child gets is dependent on so many factors, many of which are out of a school's control. The role of educators is to ensure we supplement students' existing protective experience with the necessary amount and type of adaptive skills so that when adversity comes (be it academic, social, physical or other) they are able to endure discomfort with confidence that it will lead to growth.

Adaptive skills are taught everyday by teachers who give praise and encouragement as students work on a difficult math problem or write their first 5 sentence paragraph, and by school counselors who give social skills lessons to whole classes and meet with individual students to teach them coping skills as they deal with life challenges.

We're proud to be partners with families to help students balance the scale so that they are prepared for whatever life throws at them.

We also recognize that there are some students who come to us with unfair loads of significant adversity - things that a child should not have to endure. This breaks our hearts, but we are ready to meet the challenge of loving them and filling any gaps in their adaptive skill set.

InBrief: The Science of Resilience

Not all children experience lasting harm as a result of early adversity. Some demonstrate resilience, or an adaptive response to serious hardship.

Parents On Campus

Hey Parents, just a reminder that henceforth you will please say goodbye to your child in the carpool lane or at the kindergarten gate. The first few days of allowing parents on campus with their children has come and gone. We'll be ready to help your kiddo if they are struggling in the morning.

Good news - there are two more days in the school year when you can come onto campus with your student - we call these events "Parents, Patriots and Pastries" mostly because we are keen on alliterations and also because we like to eat donuts. The next Parents, Patriots and Pastries event is September 19th. Save the date!

Breakfast and Lunch Menus Breakfast and Lunch Menus

Dear Parents,

We are grateful that so many students join us for breakfast each morning! To keep our meal program in compliance with state and federal guidelines, we need to remind families that students must eat breakfast at the school they attend.

Each school’s breakfast is planned and portioned specifically for the age group it serves. When students eat at a different campus, they may receive meals that don’t match the requirements for their grade level.

Beginning immediately, students will need to eat breakfast at their assigned school only. If a student arrives at another campus, staff will kindly direct them back to their own school.

Thank you for your support as we continue working to provide nutritious, well-balanced meals for all of our students. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
