Message from the Principal and Assistant Principal

Dear Hillcrest and Pine Avenue Families,

At Hillcrest and Pine Avenue, we begin each day with the Panther Pledge—a short but powerful statement that helps students center themselves, reflect on their choices, and commit to being their best. While it may sound simple, this pledge is a cornerstone of our school culture. It’s more than a routine; it’s a daily reminder that every child can grow, take pride in their actions, and make each day count.

The pledge reads: “I believe in myself and my ability to do my best at all times. I will act in such a way that I will be proud of myself, and others will be proud of me too. I will not waste this day, because this day will not come again.” Each line is intentionally chosen to guide students in building self-confidence, accountability, and purpose. When we say “I believe in myself,” we’re helping children recognize their own potential. When we talk about acting with pride, we’re teaching them to consider how their choices affect both themselves and others. And when we remind them that each day is unique, we’re encouraging them to make the most of every opportunity.

Throughout the school year, we use the pledge as a tool for reflection and growth. Students learn that mistakes are part of learning, and that what matters most is how we respond. We help them understand that correcting a misstep is not a punishment—it’s a chance to show responsibility and resilience. These lessons are woven into APS ROARS, classroom conversations, restorative practices, and everyday interactions. Over time, students begin to internalize these values and lead themselves with integrity, even when no one is watching.

Families play a vital role in reinforcing the pledge’s message at home. You don’t need to recite it daily, but you can support its spirit by asking questions like, “What made you proud today?” or “How did you use your time well?” Celebrating effort, modeling how to make things right, and encouraging reflection all help children connect what they learn at school to their lives beyond it. These small moments build a bridge between home and school, creating a shared language of growth and character.

The Panther Pledge is more than a tradition—it’s a shared commitment to helping children become thoughtful, responsible, and empowered individuals. As your partner in education, when families and educators work together to nurture these values, we create a community where every child can thrive.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support helps our students live the pledge—not just say it.

Your partner in education,

Dr. Konowalow and Ms. Jaeck

Coffee with the Principal

Curious about how our students are preparing for a future shaped by technology, global connections, and lifelong learning? Join us for Coffee with the Principal on Thursday, October 31, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, with entrance by the library.

We’ll explore the Bridges math program and the Bookworms literacy curriculum—two powerful tools that help students build critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. Our Math and Literacy Coaches will walk families through the rubrics we use, share classroom insights, and answer your questions about how we’re preparing students for success—today and tomorrow.

Following Coffee with the Principal, families are invited to stay and enjoy our Halloween Parade at 2:00 pm.

Hillcrest and Pine Avenue Halloween Parades

Our Halloween Parade will begin at 2:00 PM. Families are welcome to attend and cheer on our students as they showcase their costumes and enjoy the spirit of the season. In both parades, students will be walking. Please note the following parade paths:

Hillcrest students will walk two city blocks. Students and staff will begin by walking down Elizabeth to Allen Avenue. Students will take Allen Avenue to East Marshall. Students will walk up East Marshall back to Hillcrest. Parents can watch the parade on one of the following streets on the map. (Elizabeth, Allen Avenue, East Marshall)

Pine Avenue students will give back to the community by bringing haloween joy to the residents of Arbor Grove. Students cross over to Pine Avenue and walk up to Arbor Grove. Students will parade through Arbor Grove, walk down Pine Avenue, cross over, and return to school. Parents can watch the parade on Pine Avenue between the school and Arbor Grove.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us create a joyful and respectful celebration for all! Your support is invaluable and we look forward to celebrating Halloween with you and your children.

School Highlights School Highlights

Hillcrest first grade students had a fantastic fall adventure at Anderson and Girls this week! From picking apples to learning about farm animals, the day was filled with hands-on experiences and joyful discoveries.

Students explored the orchard, met a variety of animals, and learned about life on the farm—all while soaking up the crisp autumn air. To top it all off, they ended the day with a sweet treat: fresh apple cider and donuts!

A huge thank you to our amazing PTO for sponsoring this memorable trip. Their continued support helps us create meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. We’re so grateful for their partnership and generosity!.
