CAPTAIN CROWTHER'S CORNER

Hello Navigators!

We have a really busy upcoming week ahead! Besides all the work students will be doing, we will be having a fun day on Thursday - Storybook Character Day! This is a day for our students to have fun dressing up as a character from a BOOK. No masks, no scarey costumes, and no "weapons" that might go with their character.

When someone asks them what book their character is from, they need to be able to tell us! Thanks for your help with this!

Time change on November 1 - we FALL back!

Also - enjoy your long weekend! Remember - no school for students on Friday, Monday, or Tuesday! We will see everyone back here bright and early on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Four houses, one family—and together, we help every Navigator thrive.

MEET OUR NEWEST NAVIGATOR - COCO! MEET OUR NEWEST NAVIGATOR - COCO!

A HUGE shout-out and thank you to the "Canines Who Care" organizaation for finding us a Therapy Dog!

We had a Coco "parade" on Wednesday so that Coco could meet our Navigators. Coco loved it and so did our students! We will be looking for lots of ways for Coco to be on campus, but for now, we will start with her visiting on Wednesday mornimgs. She will alternate between the front foyer and the car rider entrance. We have reviewed the expectations with our students when they visit Coco. Her handler, Ms. Lauren, and our Counselor, Ms. Taylor, will keep an eye out to make sure everyone is safe.

Having Lunch With Your Child

Parents may begin to have lunch with their child on Monday, August 24. Beginning August 24th, visitors are welcomed to come eat with their child. All visitors must check in with a valid ID in the front office.

Parents are asked to sit in the special seating area with ONLY your child. Other students are not allowed to join you and your child for lunch.

Outdoor seating will open once the weather cools off. We will let you know when that area is open.

You may bring in fast food for your child only - do not bring outside food for any other students.

Our students receive a 30 minute lunch daily. Please take into consideration that the 30 minutes is cut down by the time it takes to go through the line to get their lunch as well as clean up time. We will have staff members assisting during lunch time during the first week and a half to allow our students, especially the littles, to get used to the routines.

Students are welcomed to bring their lunch or buy lunch at school, per district policy students may not receive food deliveries at school. However, parents may bring outside food to eat with their child. Please note that we do not have access to warming up a student's lunch.

Meal prices are as follows:

Paid Lunch: $2.70

Reduced Price Lunch: $0.40

Paid Breakfast: $1.25

Reduced Price Breakfast: $0.30 (until September 1st, then free)

You may apply for the free and reduced lunch using the following link:

Meal Applications

Students are also given the option of ala cart items or snack items. Please let your child know when they may buy snacks from the cafe. There are so many students that our staff cannot keep up with who can and who cannot buy snacks. Thanks for your help with this!

The Child Nutrition Department is happy to place restrictions on your student’s account. It is your right as the parent to limit your child's snack purchases and what they can consume. Child Nutrition can place restrictions for days and/or amounts. For example, many parents choose to only allow 1-2 snack items be purchased either daily, or on select days like only Fridays.

Please let the department know if you’d like to add this to your child’s account. All that's needed is the name and ID number and it will be added.

Please visit our Child Nutrition webpage for more information about our child nutrition program, such as meal prices and payment options.

SRO BLOTTER - Meet our School Resource Officer!

Greetings, Parents of Negley!

Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Rhegan Davis, and I am the Deputy assigned to NES as a School Resource Officer. This is my second year here, and I absolutely love it. This is my 14th year in law enforcement. Over my career, I have been in many different positions, and this is by far the best one yet. My main responsibility as the NES SRO is to make sure all of your children arrive and go home safely, which I am certain you all appreciate.

With that said, I have a couple of requests that would very much help me in this duty. I know morning drop-off and afternoon pickup are hectic. I completely understand that many of you have jobs you must get to, and no one enjoys waiting in a line for anything. But there are a couple of observations I have made so far that I’m hoping we can work through.

Parking: Texas law prohibits parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, in front of a fire hydrant, or 30 feet of a stop sign. This helps us maintain better visibility in our very tight roadways. This can be found under Texas Transportation Code 545.302.

U-Turns: Texas law allows for U-turns when they can be made safely. This essentially cannot be done when the school zones are active in the morning and afternoon. This is found in Texas TC 545.103.

Crossing Guards: A person may not willfully fail or refuse to comply with the lawful direction of a school crossing guard. This can be found under Texas TC 542.501.

Ultimately, I have one big request that I know many of you will not appreciate. But this process is done for a safety reason. If your child arrives at school or goes home in a vehicle in any way, on a daily basis, please use the car rider line. This limits the number of moving vehicles and walking children interacting in uncontrolled environments.

I really appreciate your assistance with keeping everyone’s children safe!

Humbly,

Rhegan

Pages from the Library

New at Negley

Hello, Negley families! I’m so excited to introduce myself as your new librarian! After 18 years as an English Language Arts educator in the classroom, I knew that becoming a librarian was something I had always hoped to do. As I grew into an educator, I developed an even deeper appreciation for the power of books, curiosity, and creating spaces where students can discover, explore, and find joy in reading. Growing up, the library was always a very special place for me. It was a place where I could get lost in a story, be a part of a community, discover something new, and let my imagination grow. I hope to create that same feeling for our students here at Negley.

I earned my master’s degrees in Humanities and Library Science, and the rest is history! 😊

A little about me, I love spending time with my family, hiking, reading, visiting bookstores, drinking tea or coffee with friends and watching some great shows.

I’ll be working alongside our wonderful new Library Technician, Mrs. Parent, and together we are so excited to make the library a welcoming place for every student. We can’t wait for a year filled with wonderful books, new discoveries, creativity, and lots of library adventures!

Your Negley Librarian,

Mrs. Neeley

Student ID Badges

It is the expectation that all students will wear their Student ID at all times during the school day. We are working to get those printed and to our students. Lost ID’s must be replaced as soon as possible. Replacement badges can be purchased through REVTRAK for $5. The ID’s will be printed on campus and the student will be notified once ready.

Don't forget technology insurance for your child's school chromebook!

Here are the links to see what the protection plan will cover. Please consider! Each child is assigned a specific chromebook to use for the school year. If something were to happen that repairs were needed, the parent is asked to pay for the repair. If an accident were to happen that your child's chromebook was beyond repair and a new one was needed, you would have to pay the cost of a new device - currently running at $350. The insurance really helps you A LOT!

Birthdays:

  • Please contact teacher for class count and allergy information before bringing treats.
  • Parents cannot attend birthday celebrations in the classroom.
  • Birthday treats will be handed out to students at the end of the day.
  • HaysCISD recommends individually wrapped store-bought items. Homemade items will NOT be accepted.
  • Drinks are not allowed.
  • Balloons are NOT allowed and if brought, will be kept in front office.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS! Our goal this year - 96%

Please have your child at school, on time, every day (unless they are truly sick!). If you think your child is suffering from school avoidance, please contact your child's teacher immediately! There are things we can do at school to support this!

WHEN IS THE STUDENT IN VIOLATION OF THE COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE LAW?

The student is in violation of the Compulsory Attendance Law if a student fails to attend school on 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year without a valid excuse (unexcused absences) as stated by district or state policies.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A STUDENT IS IN VIOLATION OF THE COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE LAW?

 Parents are subject to prosecution for parent contributing to non-attendance. An offense under this section (Sect. 25.093) is a Class C misdemeanor…(up to $500 fine per offense)

 Students are subject to truancy prevention measures under Section 25.0915 of the Texas Education Code.

 Students are subject to a referral to a truancy court for truant conduct under Section 65.003 of the Family Code.

WHAT IS AN “UNEXCUSED” ABSENCE?

An unexcused absence is an absence that does not fall within the state or district guidelines. An unexcused absence occurs when the parent cannot produce any document that explains the absence or the parent presents documentation that doesn’t meet district criteria. Recorded unexcused absences will remain as “unexcused” if acceptable documentation is not received within five school days after student’s return to school.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures - This is a lot - please read carefully!

ARRIVAL:

All students/parents who are walking/riding bkies to school are to enter the front doors of the building.

Only students will be allowed to enter through the side doors where the car rider line is. No adults will be allowed to enter those doors (with the exception being teachers, of course)

Students will be allowed in the building beginning at 7:00am. Students will procede to the Shipyard (Cafeteria) if they arrive before 7:15. Students arriving after 7:15 will go to their classroom OR to the cafeteria for a quick breakfast.

Students may walk/ride their bikes/scooters to school. Bikes and Scooters are to be labeled and parked in the bike racks at the front of the school.

CAR RIDER LINE:

This line will be VERY long for the first 2 weeks of school as our students learn the routines of getting out of the car.

*Help your child by having everything ready to go in their backpack, including lunch box if possible.

*Say your goodbyes with kisses, etc. before you leave the house - this takes up lots of time in the car rider line.

*PLEASE HAVE YOUR CAR SEATS ARRANGED SO THAT YOUR CHILD CAN EXIT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. IT IS NOT SAFE FOR THEM TO EXIT ON THE DRIVER SIDE! it also causes delays of the line moving.

THE ROAD BESIDE ROCKING HORSE IS NOT ACCESSIBLE TO NEGLEY TRAFFIC! Car riders may NOT drop off their student at the garden gate area. Only golf carts will be allowed at this time. IF safety concerns continue, we will re-evaluate golf carts using this road.

*Try to leave the house early and don't wait til the last minute! Once the 7:30 bell rings, the crossing guards will close off the side parking lot and you will have to drive your child to the front doors and they will be given a tardy slip.

*Please be kind to our safety patrol students and our teachers! They are providing a service to you to help your child safely enter school. Cussing and yelling may make you feel better, but it doesn't help our students or teachers start their day on a good note.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DISMISSAL

It is critical that your child know the number on their Navigator Pick UP tag/circle! Please practice memorizing this number. It will help dimissal go much faster!

WE CAN PROMISE - it will be terrible the first 2 weeks of school as our students learn dismissal routines. We have an amazing process that we have been tweaking over the past few years that works VERY well! We are asking parents to please be patient!

Bus Riders/Car Riders

*We will begin dismissing our bus riders and car riders right at 2:55. You MUST have your transportation tag hanging on your rearview mirror. We will use this number to call your child out to the pickup area. If you don't have this tag, you will be sent up to the front office to get your tag. If you forgot it, you will have to present your ID and your child will be brought to the front office for you to pick up.

Independent Walkers

*Once the busses clear the front drive, we will release our students who walk or bike on their own - they are called independent walkers/bikers. This will be at 3:00. It takes them 2-3 minutes to clear out.

Parent Walkers

*At this point, we begin calling the numbers of our students who walk with their parents - these are called parent walkers.

*Parents in this category will stand out by the flagpoles. It helps if you are in a line.

*You MUST present your Navigator Pick Up tag in order to pick up your child. If you don't have one, you will be asked to proceed to the front office to either get your tag or show your ID to get your child.

*Once the number is called, parents may proceed across the parking lot to wait for their child on the front porch area.

*Expect the first 2 weeks to possibly take until 3:30 to pick up your child. BUT - By early - mid September we usually have the front area cleared by 3:10 - 3:15! It's amazing! Car rider line usually clears by 3:15 but it's usually more toward the end of September.
