Month of Peace

April 13th- For the month of April, Stark County JHHS will be celebrating a

Month of Peace. This month, we will be learning about how to support,

include, and celebrate underrepresented groups. This month, we will be

asking you to participate in social-emotional lessons, create a flag using

our theme Love Grows Here, and take time out of your day to learn about

how to be kind to others and increase your social responsibility.

April 14th- In April 1996, University of Virginia student Maria Pulzetti

created the Day of Silence to find a way to raise awareness by doing

something that was visible and available for all students to participate in to

raise the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. It is observed yearly on the

2nd Friday of April.

April 15th- People with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD are

considered neurodiverse. Neurodiversity describes the idea that people

experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways;

there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and

differences are not viewed as deficits.

April 16th- Demi Lovato has been vocal about their struggles with bipolar

disorder, substance abuse, and eating disorders. They created the

documentary Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, detailing their mental

health journey. Demi is a vocal advocate for therapy, medication, and

support systems as essential tools for healing.

April 17th- Lady Gaga has spoken about her experiences with PTSD,

depression, and anxiety stemming from sexual assault and industry

pressures. She founded the Born This Way Foundation, which promotes

youth mental health and well-being. She also regularly discusses mental

health in interviews, encouraging people to seek help and be kind to

themselves.

April 20th- LeBron James grew up in poverty with a single mother in Akron,

Ohio, often moving between homes. His struggles gave him a strong sense

of responsibility and a passion for helping others. LeBron founded the I

PROMISE School to provide free education, meals, and college

scholarships for underprivileged kids. He is also an outspoken advocate for

racial and economic justice through the More Than A Vote initiative.

April 21st- Laverne Cox struggled with bullying, discrimination, and

self-acceptance growing up in Alabama. She even attempted suicide as a

teenager due to societal rejection. Laverne became the first openly

transgender woman nominated for a Primetime Emmy and has used her

platform to advocate for trans rights, focusing on issues like healthcare,

representation, and anti-trans violence.

April 22nd- One out of every five (20.2%) students reports being bullied.

The reasons for being bullied reported most often by students include

physical appearance, race/ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, and sexual

orientation.

April 23rd- Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers of all time, struggled

with dyslexia and reported he could barely read his high school textbooks.

Nonetheless, he managed to graduate and then became an Olympic gold

medalist at the age of 18.

April 24th- Artist Bad Bunny is known for being outspoken about and in

support of sexual fluidity and in 2020 was quoted as saying, “At the end of

the day, I don’t know if in 20 years I will like a man. One never knows in life.

But at the moment, I am heterosexual and I like women.”

April 27th- Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, struggled with

gender dysphoria and the pressure to conform to Hollywood’s expectations.

For years, they felt trapped in an identity that wasn’t their own. Since

coming out as transgender in 2020, Elliot has become a vocal advocate for

trans rights. They use their platform to raise awareness about gender

dysphoria, trans healthcare, and representation in media.

April 28th- Gold medalist in figure skating, Alysa Liu, walked away from

her sport in 2022 at the age of 16 due to the extreme stress and pressure

from coaches who controlled the music she could listen to, what she could

wear and precisely how much she could eat, which led to an abnormal

childhood and an eating disorder. Since her return to figure skating, she

has been a strong voice in discussing the normalization of disordered

eating in figure skating and recently stated, “No one’s going to starve me or

tell me what I can or can’t eat.”

April 29th- Popular trans TikToker Brianna Ghey (Gay) was murdered on

February 11, 2023, after being lured to a park and stabbed to death 28

times by 2 former transphobic classmates from her high school. The killers

were each sentenced to over 20 years in prison.

April 30th- Vivian Wilson has become a visible advocate for trans rights by

speaking openly about her experience as a transgender daughter of a

high‐profile public figure. Her willingness to live publicly and assert her

identity has helped bring national attention to issues facing trans youth.

Through her visibility, she has challenged misinformation and contributed to

broader conversations about acceptance and legal protections. Her

presence alone has had a meaningful cultural impact by humanizing trans

experiences for a wide audience.
