Principal's Message
Dear MMK Families,
Welcome back to an exciting new school year at Mary M. Knight! As we open our doors on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, I can't express how thrilled I am to see our students' smiling faces once again. The anticipation of reuniting with our MMK family has been building, and we're ready for an incredible year ahead.
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended our Back-to-School BBQ last Friday. The event was a tremendous success, thanks to your enthusiastic participation. Special thanks go out to our amazing community partners who joined us: South Sound Reading, The Matlock Fire Department, Friends of Schaefer Park, The Matlock Grange, and our dedicated PTO. A particular shout-out to our PTO volunteers who worked tirelessly to prepare delicious food for our MMK families – your efforts are truly appreciated!
Our staff has been hard at work, engaging in professional development to hone their skills and expand their knowledge. Their commitment to supporting every student's growth and success this year is truly inspiring. We're all eager to put these new strategies into practice as we welcome your children back to the classroom.
I'm excited to announce that our new MMK website is up and running! This will be an excellent tool for staying connected and informed throughout the year. Additionally, we have a phone application available for both Android and Apple devices that complements the website. I encourage you to download it and set up notifications to receive key information throughout the year. Our goal is to foster positive and transparent communication about all the great things happening at Mary M. Knight.
For those who haven't yet seen the bus routes for this year, please remember to check the transportation tab on our new website. Ensuring a smooth start to the school day begins with knowing the right pick-up times and locations.
As we embark on this first week, I'm looking forward to seeing our students and staff dive into our theme for the year: GRIT. This concept of perseverance and passion for long-term goals will guide us as we face challenges and celebrate successes together.
Here's to a fantastic first week and an even better school year ahead. Your support and partnership make MMK the special place it is, and I'm honored to be part of this community.
Warmly,
[Principal's Name]

--- Character Strong ---
Character Strong
This year, we will continue our journey of implementing Character Strong as our Social-Emotional curriculum at Mary M. Knight. Character Strong is a curriculum that provides universal instruction aligned to state and national social-emotional learning standards.
Over the past two years, we began at the elementary (grades PK-6) level, expanding to the middle (grades 7-8), and finally to the secondary level (grades 9-12) as a whole-district program. Future emails will share more specific focuses and information for each grade level as we begin.
----GRIT and Positive Referrals----
Weekly above the line students
Positive Referrals - These are referrals that any staff member can fill out on a student who they feel are consistently demonstrating actions or behaviors related to our OWLS behavior expectations of Ownership, Willingness, Leadership, and Success. When a student received a positive referral, they are give a certificate, contacted home on what they did to earn it, and are posted in the school.
GRIT Awards - In the 2024-25 academic year, we're all about embracing 'Nurturing Resilience, Inspiring Excellence' as our guiding principle. We believe that having GRIT – Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity – is key to creating a culture where challenges are seen as stepping stones to greatness. We want to foster a growth mindset in our students and ourselves, understanding that hard work and dedication can help us develop our abilities and intelligence. Student will be nominated weekly if they are demonstrating characteristics of GRIT. Student will receive a certificate and shared out.
