Here We Go!

Schools are in session!

After months of back and forth with the State and TEA and Districts, decisions are finally in as to how to send students back to school. Some are going back virtually, some are going back on campus and ALL are not 100% sure this is going to work.

It's a new world in education. Zoom is the new classroom, asynchronous is a catch phrase and pods are trending. Districts have created a BRAND NEW way to educate children in a matter of months. This is unheard of but necessary. Teachers have trained all summer on new programs and how to engage students across an internet line. Districts have purchased safety products. Parents are making decisions based on what's best for their family. It's a time of complete uncertainty across all plains.

It feels like with every decision we make, we are closing our eyes and jumping into the deep end hoping we'll come up to the light. We really don't know what's best or what's safest. No one really does. But there is history behind us, history of what we know the schools will provide to keep us buoyed.

Patience. With the constant changing pandemic, everyone involved has to be ready to change on a dime. Kids that are virtual may not be able to go back on the planned date due to a Covid rise or a local decision. Kids that are in school may have to quarantine if a case hits their class. Technical issues will arise.

Compromise. There is not a good option but it continues to be important to support our schools. Especially now when funding is in question. Our children are resilient, they will get through this with the help of their teachers and parents. Things will not be perfect, but we will find a way.

Trust. Every year we send our children to a school building, where we know the teachers and staff will keep our children safe. We have to continue to believe that the same will continue, we have no reason to doubt that everyone is doing their best for our children.

Census 2020

The new deadline to respond to the 2020 Census is now September 30, 2020. Field operations, and the self response portal with the U.S. Census Bureau will close on this date.

Please tell your relatives, friends and co-workers to go to www.2020Census.gov to complete the Census questionnaire online or call (844) 330-2020, or (844) 468-2020 for Spanish, to speak with a live Census employee who can help them fill out their questionnaire over the phone. The Census questionnaire has only nine questions and responding is easy, safe, and secure.

Keep in mind, a complete and accurate census count determines how many representatives in Congress each state will have — and how more than $675 billion in federal funds will be distributed to communities each year for the next decade. The 2020 Census results will also inform spending for critical services such as schools, hospitals, emergency management and disaster relief programs, roads, fire departments, and much more.

A little normal

Parents are doing their absolute best to make their littles feel like this is just another year, though they know in their hearts it is the opposite. How cute is this little kinder at Kriewald Elem in SWISD. She's ready for her first day!!!

Remote Education

It was wonderful to see our RootEd Rep for Eisenhower Middle School in NEISD sharing her story about her personal experience with remote education. We love her positivity and her trust in her schools.

RootEd Rep Spotlight: Connie Carrington

Connie Carrington is the former RootEd Rep for Vinyard Ranch Elementary School in North East ISD and is now the RootEd Rep for Lopez MS and Reagan High School. We have found such joy in watching Connie become a true advocate for her schools. She has traveled to Austin to hear from her Delegates. She has braved media interviews in the name of RootEd. She has spoken to large groups of parents about the importance of public education. We are so impressed with everything she does for RootEd and her neighborhood schools.

"I’m a mom of 4 (plus 2 son-in-laws) and MiMi to 6 grands. Currently have a 7th grader at Lopez MS, where I currently serve as PTA President.

Being involved with school, I have seen the need for better funding, testing reform and just overall changes to make our schools a great place to learn with teachers who can teach.

It has amazed me how uneducated people are when it comes to these issues and how they can make a difference and make a change. I decided I wanted to help make a difference and then RootEd found me.

I am currently the Reagan Cluster Rep and serve as the Reagan and Lopez Reps. Through RootEd, I’ve enjoyed the time we have spent in Austin spending time with our Representatives advocating for our schools and our children.

I love being RootEd in my neighborhood schools. "
