April Newsletter

Dear Northridge Families,

As we approach the season for the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), we understand that both students and parents may feel a mix of anticipation and anxiety. As a principal, I want to share some tips to help your middle school child feel prepared and confident. Your support is invaluable in this process, and together we can ensure a positive experience.

  • Establish a Routine

    1. Consistent Schedule: Ensure your child has a consistent daily routine that includes time for homework, study, and relaxation.
    2. Adequate Sleep: Encourage your child to get 8-10 hours of sleep per night, especially in the weeks leading up to the assessment.

    Create a Conducive Study Environment

    1. Quiet Study Space: Provide a quiet, well-lit space for your child to study, free from distractions such as television or loud music.
    2. Materials and Resources: Ensure your child has access to necessary materials such as pencils, paper, and any specific study guides or textbooks.

    Encourage Effective Study Habits

    1. Study Schedule: Help your child create a study schedule that breaks down topics into manageable sections over time, avoiding last-minute cramming.
    2. Practice Tests: Encourage your child to take practice tests to become familiar with the format and types of questions they will encounter.

    Support Well-being and Stress Management

    1. Healthy Diet: Provide nutritious meals and snacks that fuel your child's brain, particularly on the days of the assessment.
    2. Physical Activity: Encourage regular physical activity, which can reduce stress and improve concentration.
    3. Mindfulness Techniques: Introduce your child to mindfulness or relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation to manage test anxiety.
