Senior Seminar Speaker
U.S. Navy
by Madilyn Thorman
Petty Officer Alchin is a United States Navy recruiter. In the Navy, he works as a diesel mechanic, whose certification can be transferred to a civilian job. Meaning that he could get a job working on hospital generators or semi trucks. Alongside his certification, Alchin has racked up almost 70 college credits without ever setting foot in college. As some of his training counts towards specific credits. Besides education, Alchin has traveled to over thirty different countries: Australia, Dubai, Japan, and Guam are a few examples. Besides Alchin, he also brought a fellow recruit with him whose job was to load bombs onto ships and Hella carriers.
There were many benefits that Alchin highlighted from his time so far in the Navy. As you rise in rank, you get more paid vacation days–up to a whole month. Furthermore, if you are still interested in doing college, you could join the Navy for three to four years and have most, if not all, of your college tuition paid for once you get out. On board the ship, there are several activities and spaces that are available to soldiers, like a mini Walmart, food shops, and sometimes even a movie theater. Alchin also mentions that during special holidays, he could hit golf balls off the ship or go fishing.
Overall, the Navy does sound like an interesting organization to be a part of. Travel is my biggest determining factor when it comes to a career or job, and the Navy travels all over the place. It sounds promising and has good benefits. If college is not a good fit for me or anyone else, I would highly consider joining. However, I do wonder how long it will take to move up in rank and if your job on board the ship affects how much time it will take.
