Seniors, Krithika Nemala and Mae Dunleavy curated and hung the exhibition with the support of Ms. Barker of the library.

We noticed several students moving between club rooms on the first club day to find a group that fits. For next time, please plan to attend one club meeting consistently.

If you need a quiet space to work during club time, Room G24 is available. Students lingering in the mezzanines, atrium, hallways, KnowCo or StuCo area will need to either join a club or head to G24 during future advisory club days.

Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)/Extended Essay(EE) Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)/Extended Essay(EE)

Ms. Alyssa Sherlock CAS/EE Supervisor

Senior CAS/Graduation Project Spotlight:

Claire Morraye, Leah Hampson, and Fallon Mitchell ran a volleyball clinic/camp at DWest last spring that was open to young kids ranging from elementary to middle school age. They created the agenda and lesson plans, and ran the clinic itself, along with some help from fellow West Varsity teammates. This is a unique project for them because they got to plan and run it on their own terms, not following something given to them by a coach.

Class of 2026 [Seniors]:

All students should have an approved CAS or Graduation Project by now, but if not, December 1st is the last day that Class of 2026 CAS or Graduation Project Proposals can be accepted because the projects must span at least one month/40 hours.

Class of 2027 [Juniors]:

Students are working on entering an overall CAS Plan (“Aims and Goals”) into ManageBac, and at least one experience for each strand (Creativity, Activity, Service).

Class of 2026 [Seniors]:

Students will be given time in Advisory to work on and submit their EE Rough Draft on November 3.

EE Rough Drafts are due to both ManageBac and Turnitin by November 7.

Students MUST submit a Rough Draft in order to receive feedback for revision.

Second meeting with EE Advisor and RPPF #2 due before the end of November.

Class of 2027 [Juniors]:

During the formal introduction to CAS during Advisory on October 15th, students were reminded of the Class of 2027 CAS/EE Schoology course for all the resources and materials that they will need. Students have also been encouraged to start brainstorming a subject for their Extended Essay. Example essays are available on Schoology for students to read and get an idea of the expectations.

Dual Enrollment Updates from Dr. Podell

As the school year continues on, many exciting things are happening in the world of dual enrollment. Here’s some of the happenings:

In the month of November, registration will go live for Immaculata University’s dual credit opportunity. You will be notified when this is live, with instructions for how to apply, register, and pay for credits. There will be a virtual information session on this opportunity in an evening in mid-November. Stay tuned for the time and date.

Also covered in this session will be further details regarding the opportunity our STEM students have to earn an Associate’s Degree alongside their high school diploma. The first cohort of students in this program is turning the corner around their first set of midterms, and are looking forward to continued success.

If you are a parent of a STEM Freshman or Sophomore, and you’d like more information about this program, please reach out to Troy Podell.

All DCCC students will be checking in with Dr. Podell during 5th period of L days in the First Floor Mezzanine.

STEM Class of 2026/LeadX

The initial cohort of participants in the University of Delaware’s LeadX program at STEM are continuing through the first module of the course. Students are engaged in thorough self-examination, seeking to understand themselves before seeking to lead others. Students have identified core values, taken an inventory from the VIA Institute to gauge their strongest character traits, and have reflected on their individual Leadership ‘Why?’ The next module will begin to delve into Leadership Theory, as students prepare to enact an action plan to put theory into practice.

One the primary goals of the STEM Academy, and our district, is to prepare students for a future of their choice. At STEM, we take pride in intentionally cultivating the skills, habits, and dispositions that our partners in industry inform us are integral to success. In addition to integrating this into our classes, we offer our students specific targeted training in partnership with the MidAtlantic Employers Association and this year, Dr. Troy Podell will also be presenting on a variety of topics as noted below.

Student Drop Off

Please be reminded that students are to be dropped off behind the school. No students should be dropped off on Manor Ave. We appreciate your cooperation. Safety is always our first priority.

Traffic:

Parents are not permitted to park, drop-off, or pick-up students from the left side of the Academy or on Manor Avenue.

Arriving at School on Time: We have a lot of work to do each day with our STEM Academy students. Therefore, it is critical for students to arrive on time whether they are riding with a family member, friend, or driving themselves to school. The school day begins promptly at 8:00 am. Students are expected to be in their classroom by 8:00 am each morning in order to maximize their experience with us. We will be lenient the first week but students driving or obtaining a ride are expected to be to school on time.
