Dear Winfield Families Dear Winfield Families

Winter benchmarking is underway, with students participating in NWEA MAP assessments in math and reading for grades kindergarten through 9th, as well as FastBridge fluency assessments for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. This is an exciting time of year as students set goals for continued growth, reflect on how far they have come, and help guide instruction as we move into the second half of the school year.

A big thank you to the PTO/WEF and our school community for a wonderful Trivia Night! It is always a fun and spirited evening in support of Winfield, and we truly appreciate the time, planning, and dedication it takes to make one of our largest fundraisers such a success.

We hope you enjoy the long weekend—and, of course, cheering on a Bears victory!

With Tiger Pride,

Melissa Doucet

Trivia Night –Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Trivia Night! It was a blast! Many laughs were shared and random facts were learned. Congrats to team “Super Bowl Shuttle” on their trivia win! Most importantly–with the generous support of our attendees and prize sponsors–we were able to raise close to $5,000! Money raised will support WEF’s annual fund which helps provide educational enrichment opportunities to all students and our long-term fundraising goal of upgrading the preschool playground. A special thank you to the planning committee and helpers: Emily and Anthony Alanis, Jen Cheehy, Gina Christensen, Annie and Joe Hart, Kelly and Mike Kurzer, Kevin Poch, and Karen Sabados for all of their work on this year’s event!

This week in third grade, we began a unit in reading about why people participate in government. In science, students participated in a book walk to explore various animals for an upcoming research project. 4th graders had a blast on their field trip to the Field Museum. Students were able to make connections to their social studies learning and explored interesting exhibits. In writing, students started a creative writing project on “if they were stuck in a snow globe.” Students were encouraged to use their imaginations, create characters, utilize strategies taught for writing, and to develop a story that a reader would enjoy. Students were given an outline to assist them in guiding them through the writing process. Students were very eager and excited to begin this. We can’t wait to see what they come up with! Students celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. on Friday with a reading activity and a fun project! In 5th grade, students began a new science unit where they will be exploring ecosystems and creating food webs. In reading, they continued their novel study Matilda and practiced skills such as using context clues and summarizing.
