Ask Questions Better and Easier!
Tech Tip Tuesday (April 30, 2024)
The essence of questioning in the K-12 classroom goes beyond simply getting rote memorized answers. It's about sparking curiosity, igniting a deeper understanding, and nurturing critical thinking skills in students. It's a two-way street that involves both teacher-driven and student-driven inquiry.
1️⃣ Deeper understanding and gauging knowledge: By asking questions, teachers can check if students grasp concepts and identify any misconceptions. This allows them to tailor their teaching and provide corrective feedback where needed.
2️⃣ Developing critical thinking and fostering discussion: Effective questioning goes beyond factual recall. It can prompt students to analyze, evaluate, and make connections between ideas. This fosters discussions, allowing students to develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
One mindset I like to use when developing questioning for students and priming students for their own questions is the Question Formulation Technique out of The Right Question Institute (RQI).
The Question Formulation Technique (QFT) is an unexpectedly easy-to-use method that empowers students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
How can technology help?
Although technology can’t replace these human skills, it has the potential to help schools implement a more “hands-on, minds-on” approach to teaching them.
Try out a Schoology Discussion to get students building off of each other's thoughts, asking questions inside of Kami, or hitting different levels of DOK easily with MagicSchool's DOK Questions Generator!
My last resource is one of my favorite things to do in the classroom (intentionally):
