Stevenson High School
September 18, 2026
Dear Stevenson Families and Students,
This year at Stevenson, we've focused closely on the core pillars of Pride, Tradition, and Legacy. When we speak of Spartan Pride, we are not merely referencing our school colors or the banners hanging in our gymnasium. We are describing the living culture of our building. A culture that is defined by the everyday choices, integrity, and genuine kindness of our students and staff.
Spartan Pride is the standard we hold ourselves to when no one is watching, and it is seen whenever someone goes above and beyond for our school community. Take Oliver Getz, our marching band drum major, for instance. When asked to learn and perform Taps on short notice for our 9/11 commemoration, he embraced the challenge without hesitation. Through diligent practice, he mastered the solemn piece and delivered a deeply moving tribute that captured the true spirit of Spartan Pride.
To honor these meaningful contributions, our staff regularly nominates students through the Spartan Pride Recognition Initiative. Students awarded Spartan Pride shirts are recognized not for receiving the highest score on an exam, but for demonstrating exceptional character, empathy, and selfless leadership.
A strong school culture doesn't happen by accident. It's built through genuine partnerships between our school, our homes, and our community. To our parents and guardians: thank you for instilling these core values in your children. To our dedicated teachers and staff: thank you for modeling character, excellence, and care every day.
As we move through the school year, let's keep finding ways to show Spartan Pride!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

NAVIGATING SHS
EARLY STUDENT CHECK OUT
πPlease send a note with your student. They can take it to their AP office for a pass to be dismissed from class early.
π€³If you need to call, please do so at least 1.5-2 hours prior. Therefore, we do not have to interrupt classroom instruction and can have your student ready for pick up upon your arrival.
π¨ BUS LOOP DROP-OFF β PLEASE READ
For the safety of our students, bus drivers, and all parent vehicles, please DO NOT enter the Bus Loop for student drop-off before 7:10 AM.
Buses are actively loading and unloading students prior to 7:10 AM. Children can be difficult for bus drivers to see when they are walking between buses, and additional vehicle traffic makes it challenging for buses to safely maneuver through the loop.
If you are dropping off your student before 7:10 AM, please use the Main Entrance or the West Side of the building. The Bus Loop may be used for parent drop-off AFTER 7:10 AM.
We understand that mornings can be busy, but keeping the Bus Loop clear before 7:10 AM is an important safety measure. Please help us keep students, buses, and vehicles moving safely by following this drop-off procedure.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us make safety a priority each morning!
SHS POLICY UPDATES
Leaving Campus Early
Does your student need to leave school early for an appointment or family need? Please remember our 3-step check-out process:
Step 1- Parent/Guardian Authorization: A parent or guardian must either submit a written note, submit a ParentConnect note, or place a phone call to the school authorizing the early release.
Step 2 - Assistant Principal Clearance: Whether authorized by a parent note or a phone call, students must visit their Assistant Principalβs office first to receive clearance.
Step 3 - Building Sign-Out: After AP approval, students must sign out at the main security desk before leaving campus.
Electronic Devices
At Stevenson, we deeply value every single instructional minute. We know that deep learning requires a distraction-free environment, which is why instructional time across all grade levels remains strictly device-free in alignment with Michigan law and district policy.
Here is what you and your student need to know:
In-Class Storage: Cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and other electronic devices must be off or silenced. Phones must be placed in designated classroom storage areas, and all other devices kept in backpacks during class time. Device usage is allowed during passing time and lunch.
Protecting Class Time: To ensure a disruption-free learning space, please direct urgent family communications through the main office. Students needing to make a phone call home may do so from the office.
Enforcement: Teachers will partner with students to handle minor issues in the classroom. Persistent non-compliance will involve school administration, which may include device confiscation and disciplinary action.
Exceptions & Liability: Accommodations are made for documented medical needs (e.g., continuous glucose monitors) or admin approval. Students bring devices to school at their own risk; the school is not liable for lost, stolen, or damaged property.

2026-2027 FAFSA
Haven't Completed the FAFSA Yet?? No Problem!
This school year saw delays & complications with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Thankfully that is all behind us and financial aid reports have been sending to college & trade school financial aid offices since April. If you have a graduating senior, assist their completion of the FAFSA with the resources below. There has never been a better time for students to use state & federal aid to pay for postsecondary costs. Remember, by filling out the FAFSA you are not accepting loans; your student may be eligible for free money in the form of Grants, Scholarships, Michigan Tuition Assistance Program & the Michigan Achievement Scholarship. The only way to utilize this free financial aid is to do the first step - complete the FAFSA.

Student Assistance Provider: Stephanie Manske
My name is Stephanie Manske, and I am the Student Assistance Provider at Stevenson High School. In my role, I work to support our studentsβ emotional and social well-being. This semester, we are offering a variety of support groups designed to assist students dealing with grief, anxiety and substance use. We also have a group for new students.
These groups are available to students based on recommendations from teachers and counselors, responses from our student survey, or through student self-referral. Participation is entirely voluntary, and the groups will run for 8-10 weeks.
If you do not wish for your student to participate in one of these support groups, please let me know. However, if you believe your son or daughter would benefit from one of these opportunities, I encourage you to reach out to me directly at smanske@livoniapublicschools.org.
Thank you for your continued support of your studentβs well-being. I look forward to working together to ensure a positive and supportive experience for all of our students.
Question on the Week
What can parents do when their teen is struggling to get enough sleep?
Staying up late to scroll through social media and catch up with friends on phones may be second nature for many teens.
But the habit comes at a cost: Forty-three percent of parents say their teens struggle to fall asleep β or wake up and can't get back to sleep β according to the latest University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health.
More than half of parents of teens with sleep troubles think electronics are to blame.
Once they hit puberty, adolescents need eight to 10 hours of sleep per night, but just over a third of American teens say they are getting at least eight hours on a typical school night.
And research shows that inadequate or disrupted sleep can have long-lasting health effects.
"Teen sleep deprivation is a growing public health issue because most young adults simply aren't getting enough sleep," says Ellen Selkie, M.D., an adolescent medicine physician at Mott. "We sometimes focus on sleep quality for young children but forget that adolescents' brains and bodies are still developing, too."
Poor sleep negatively affects teens' ability to concentrate and perform well at school, Selkie notes. Research also links inadequate sleep to health problems ranging from obesity to anxiety and depression. Mood problems also can impair relationships.
For teen drivers, lack of quality sleep can be particularly dangerous, increasing their risk of car accidents.
So what's a parent to do?
Selkie, in her own words, offered simple ways to improve a teen's sleep hygiene in her article 10 Tips to Help Your Teen Sleep Better.
