A Note from Superintendent Conroy

Dear St. Johnsbury School District Team,

As we move into the new year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible work we have been doing together to support our students and strengthen our community. It’s inspiring to see the dedication, passion, and innovation that all of you bring to our schools each day. We are making great strides, and I’m excited to share some of the key highlights from our recent work.

Academic Growth and Achievement

Our commitment to excellence in education is clearly evident in the progress we have made in student proficiency. As part of our continuous improvement efforts, we set ambitious goals to achieve 60% proficiency in reading and 50% proficiency in mathematics by June 2025. Thanks to your hard work and commitment, we have seen significant growth, with reading proficiency rising from 42% in the fall to 54% this winter, and mathematics increasing from 31% to 53%. We’re excited to continue this momentum as we move toward the spring assessments.

Supporting Wellness

Supporting the well-being of our staff is one of our top priorities, and we have made great progress in fostering a healthy, supportive environment for everyone. Our in-service day on January 17th will feature a variety of wellness activities designed to help us recharge, as well as an opportunity to connect with one another, strengthen relationships, and foster a sense of camaraderie across our team. I hope this day will provide you with tools and resources to prioritize your physical and mental health and I encourage you to participate in whichever way feels most beneficial to you. Thank you to our wellness team for organizing these valuable sessions, and we look forward to seeing everyone engage in these activities!

Organizational Chart

I am pleased to share the revised organizational chart, which includes changes to our school’s

leadership model shifting from a co-principal model to a principal and co-assistant principal

model. This change reflects our commitment to strengthening administrative support and

ensuring effective leadership within the district. The revised chart, available below,

outlines the adjusted roles and reporting structures to support our strategic goals and enhance student success.

FY 2026 Budget Update

I want to extend my gratitude to all of you who contributed to the budget development process. Your thoughtful input has been invaluable in helping us to develop a budget that focuses on meeting the needs of our students while remaining fiscally responsible, ensuring the best outcomes for our school community.

I am pleased to share that, due to updates to our student counts, the FY2026 budget we will present on town meeting day now reflects an estimated $0.02 decrease in the property homestead tax rate from last year, lowering the tax rate to $1.77. In the coming weeks, there will be multiple opportunities for our community to learn more about the proposed budget. I will continue to hold open office hours every Tuesday morning from 10:30 am - 11:30 am in the school conference room. I encourage you to join these discussions and ask any questions you may have.

As we approach the final stages of our budget process, I would like to highlight some important upcoming dates. The Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, March 3 at 7:00 pm in the St. Johnsbury School Auditorium, where the community will have the chance to discuss the proposed budget. Voting will take place the following day, Tuesday, March 4th, at the town offices from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm. For more details on the voting process, including how to vote absentee, please visit our FAQ page on the district website, where we will continue to provide updates.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our mission. Your efforts are truly making a difference, and I am grateful for each of you. Let’s continue this journey with passion and purpose as we work toward a brighter future for all of our students.

Sincerely,
Karen E. Conroy
Superintendent

Operations & Compliance Updates from Charlotte Holt

We are actively pursuing competitive grants to enhance current and future student programming opportunities, and we are eagerly awaiting the results of several grant applications. If awarded, this funding will support the expansion of our summer and after-school programs, as well as a Community Schools Grant that would allow us to develop a therapeutic day program for students whose needs cannot be met in the traditional classroom setting. These exciting opportunities, totaling $795,000, are crucial for our school community, and we will keep you informed as we receive updates. Additionally, we are working with Marc Brown to apply for FEMA funding to recover costs from the summer flooding, which could reimburse us for up to 75% of the repair expenses.

Public Relations Committee

The Public Relations Committee (PR) meets every third Thursday at 3:00 pm in the St. Johnsbury School Conference Room. We invite all members of our school community to join us as we work together to celebrate the great things happening here at our school. The PR Committee focuses on promoting the school’s positive impact in our community, fostering goodwill between our school, employees, and the public, and ensuring that the St. Johnsbury School is seen as a vital part of our community. If you are unable to attend in person, we offer the option to participate virtually. If you would like to join us remotely please use this Zoom link.

Currently, our focus in the PR Committee is communicating about the school budget—we want to make sure the entire community is informed on our budget, how to vote, and where to find more information. Your participation is vital in helping us effectively share this important information.

Finally, if you have exciting news to share and would like a press release issued, please feel free to reach out to me at charlotte.holt@stjsd.org. Be sure to include details and verify that any photos do not contain students on the “do not photo” list, and we will be happy to help share the wonderful things happening in our school.

Farm To School Grant

We are excited to share that the St. Johnsbury School has been awarded with a $15,000 grant to support the development of a Farm to School program.

The St. Johnsbury School's Farm to School program will provide numerous benefits to students, staff, parents, and the wider community. By integrating nutrition education, local food systems, and hands-on agricultural activities into the curriculum, the program enriches students' learning and empowers them to make healthy, sustainable choices.

Key components of the program include:

  • Student Engagement: Students will participate in taste-testing programs, preparing and sampling seasonal foods while learning about the origins of their meals. This hands-on approach builds a deeper connection to healthy eating.
  • Curriculum Integration: Teachers will incorporate local food topics into lessons, empowering staff to teach interdisciplinary topics related to nutrition, gardening, and sustainability.
  • Family Involvement: The school plans to engage parents and caregivers by offering cooking events, nutrition workshops, and providing recipes for healthy meals at home.
  • Community Collaboration: By partnering with local farmers, the school will showcase fresh, local produce on school menus, promote community bonding, and support local economies.

We look forward to watching this program grown. Congratulations to the Farm to School team and school community!
