Lockdown Drill

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Student and staff safety is a top priority, and preparing for a variety of situations is one way that we can help keep students stay safe in the event of an emergency. Yesterday, Forest Hills conducted a planned lockdown drill. A lockdown uses classroom security to keep students safe.

Prior to the drill, your child's teacher shared the procedures of the drill. They explained that the reason why we might have a lockdown is if we believe there is an unsafe person in the building. When this happens, we stay safe by staying in the classroom. Like fire drills, it is unlikely that we will need a real lockdown, but it is important to practice so we know what to do.

If you would like more resources pertaining to the district's standard response protocol for lockdowns and other safety protocols, you can visit www.iloveuguys.org.

Family Night - Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice Family Night is a free event sponsored by the PTO. The event will be held on Friday, Dec 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Forest Hills Elementary Gym. Bring your family and join us for food, fun, and holiday togetherness! There will be arts & crafts, live music, and an opportunity to learn about the different holiday traditions that folks in our community celebrate at this time of year including Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, and Diwali. There will be food from some of the holidays featured this year as well as from Serbia & South Africa, desserts, coffee, and hot chocolate! If you would like to help with this event, or have any questions please contact Linda Scipio del Campo at lscipiodelcampo@gmail.com.

SCRIP Gift Card Program

The highly popular Holiday SCRIP Gift Card Program is up & running! Look in 11/15’s Friday Folders for your order form, or the link below to print and send in with a check. The SCRIP program, run by the PTO, is a great way to give holiday thanks to our amazing teachers & staff who work hard all year round making Forest Hills a great place for our Falcons. Parents may select gift cards for teachers, and also purchase gift cards for their own shopping (parents get face value & FH gets a percentage back from the vendor). All orders & payments are due in the black SCRIP box outside the FH office by Wednesday, Dec 4.

Questions? Contact Jen Cavagnaro or Caroline Olfert at fhscrip@gmail.com.

Making Sure You Receive Important District News

The Lake Oswego School District newsletter The Current is emailed to all families every Friday afternoon. It contains important district-wide news and information. As of this November, it is now coming to you from LOSD's new director of communications, Mary Kay Larson, mary.kay.larson@loswego.k12.or.us.

Because Mary Kay is a new sender, the newsletter message is going straight to many people's Spam folders. To recover the message and start receiving it directly in your in-box, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Spam folder.
  2. Find the message to move out of Spam.
  3. Click on “not spam” and the message will move to your inbox

Please note, in Spam, the newsletter formatting is compressed as a way of protecting your system from potentially unsafe content. Moving the message out of Spam will open up the newsletter in full view.

After moving the message out of your Spam folder once (maybe twice), your system should start accepting the newsletter directly into your in-box.

Vision Screening

A vision screening will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 3 @ 8:45 AM. The screening will be done by the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. The OLSHF uses a Spot screener to do the vision screening. It looks like a large camera that takes a picture of your child’s eyes. More information about Spot Vision Screener.

You will receive screening results within two weeks of the screening day, if your child is to be referred to a vision specialist. If for some reason the Spot screener could not take an adequate picture of your child’s eyes; a vision screening will be done using a distance eye chart.

You have the right to decline vision screening for your child. Please let your child’s teacher know if you would not like your child to participate. Questions or concerns can be directed to Ann Nelson, District Nurse: 503-534-2470, ann.nelson@loswego.k12.or.us

Notice of Statewide Tests and Opt Out (Repeat)

Every year, Oregon students take assessments prescribed by the State Department of Education. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure each and every child is on track and achieving learning goals. Results are also used to inform course placement and provide focused feedback to students and parents.

State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the Oregon Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the Math and English Language Arts assessments for the 2019-20 school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadline of January 1, 2020. Meeting this deadline will help your child's school with planning and preparation, and is particularly critical for 11th graders who test earlier than other students.

If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).
