Husky Happenings
Hiawatha School - Week of August 30th
Hello Husky Families-
This year at Hiawatha we are continuing to focus on attendance to help us improve student growth and achievement. It is crucial that students are in school each and every day. As much as possible we ask that you schedule appointments outside of school hours or on non-attendance days. If your child needs to attend an appointment during school hours, please bring your child before and after the appointment as well as the physician note for school.
Any student that is absent more than 5% of the school days is considered truant in the state of Illinois. We do not want this to be the case for ANY of our students. We ask that you partner with us to ensure students are present each and every day. School wide we will be tracking attendance and awarding classrooms with the best attendance each month. At Hiawatha our focus is “Every Day is Game Day”. We will begin reporting on the classrooms that have 95% attendance or better this week. We hope everyone can hit an attendance homerun for the month of September.
The iPads are an amazing tool that students use to access their learning and create projects to demonstrate their understanding. All kindergarten through 5th graders will be receiving their iPads in their classrooms very soon, if not already. We ask that you and your student talk about the responsibility of the care for the iPad and using it for only school related assignments/learning. We ask that you monitor your child at home to make sure they are engaging in purposeful, educational activities.
Have a great week!

Cell Phone Usage
Governor Pritzker signed a new law requiring all school districts to have policies banning cell phones during the school day. To help all students stay focused and succeed at school, District 100 will continue to maintain a cell phone-free learning environment through our Phones Off & Away All Day initiative.
Students in all D100 schools are expected to keep their phones turned off and out of sight from the start to the end of the school day.
Phones must be stored in lockers or backpacks, not in pockets, and cannot be used during lunch, passing periods, or in restrooms. If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call the main office.
If a student uses their phone during school hours, it will be confiscated and held in a secure location until the end of the day. In situations involving repeated offenses or gross violations, a parent/guardian will need to pick the phone up from school staff.
Exceptions for medical or individual learning needs will be made in partnership with school staff and families.
The academic success and overall well-being of students is our top priority. Limiting distractions helps students remain focused, engaged, and ready to learn, while also preventing potential issues such as cyberbullying or conflicts between peers related to cell phone use. As we approach the start of the school year, please take a moment to talk with your child about these expectations. If you believe your child may have difficulty following these expectations, we recommend keeping their phone at home during the school day.
District App
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new district mobile app!
Driven by a desire to meet our families where they are, we launched the Finalsite mobile app to ensure you can access important, relevant school information from the convenience of your smartphone.
The app allows you to subscribe to the schools your children attend, so you’re getting updates only for the buildings that are relevant to you.
We’re excited to introduce the mobile app, designed to enhance the overall family experience at Hiawatha School.
Download the app for free by searching for BSD100 in the App Store or Google Play.

Birthday Celebrations
We love birthday celebrations at Hiawatha and want everyone to feel special on their day. However this is a reminder that our school and district has a policy about bringing in baked goods for celebrations. Please help us to promote wellness and keep everyone healthy by not sending in edible treats. Non-edible treats such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc can be brought in if you wish to send.
“Schools will support and promote good nutrition for students. In the event of celebrations, no food items (baked or purchased) are allowed for students due to food allergies and nutritional school policies.”
School Safety/Visitors
Please remember if you need to enter the building, you need to enter through door 1W on East Ave to gain a visitors pass.
Entry into our schools during school hours is restricted using access control and security vestibules, and security cameras are utilized to monitor building security throughout the district. Parents and other visitors coming into schools must check in at the main office. Visitors will be asked to identify themselves and the reason for their visit before gaining access to our buildings. Only one person will be allowed entry into the building at a time. Please do not hold the door open for other visitors behind you or allow others through the door when leaving. We ask for your support and cooperation in communicating with our front office staff and complying with all visitor security protocols.
Arrival/Dismissal
Students begin entering the building promptly at 8:25. Please arrive by 8:20 to find your child’s classroom line and be ready to enter. Dismissal is at 3:00 and students will be dismissed on the playground. Please meet your child on the playground.
Please remember there is NO PARKING in our fire lane on East Ave or in the alley. If you are parking you will need to find street parking around the school and walk to the playground to pick up your child.
