General Four Year College Information
Holistic Review from University of Washington
Holistic review
While we look at many factors in reviewing applications for admission, academic preparation and performance are still primary.
Please note: The UW removed the SAT/ACT requirement for admission. Read more on the SAT/ACT page.
Preparation & performance
Indicators of preparation and performance include:
An overall strong level of academic achievement, as demonstrated by grades, depth and breadth and rigor of curriculum.
Taking advantage of college-preparatory courses during high school, such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Running Start or college in the high school; or academic subjects beyond the minimum required for college entrance.
Taking full advantage of the senior year
Demonstrating a positive grade trend
Note: The UW does not weight or prioritize one model of college-level course over another. Comparable coursework completed through AP, IB, Cambridge, Running Start and College in the High School are viewed equally for admission purposes.
Personal achievements & characteristics
What have you done outside of the classroom? Personal achievements and characteristics may include:
Demonstrating a commitment to community service and leadership
Exercising significant responsibility in a family, community, employment situation or through activities
Attaining a college-preparatory education despite socio-economic disadvantage (Washington state residents only)
Demonstrating unique perspectives or experiences
Get your application checked before submitting
Mr. Rebello and Ms. Yeager would love to check your applications for accuracy before you submit them including the Common Application, UC and CSU Application.
Note about reporting Dual Enrollment from UCLA
We continue to see the growing numbers of students taking Dual Enrollment courses. I recommend reviewing the UC Counselor Quick Reference Guide, which has increased guidance on Dual Enrollment for both first-year and transfer students. With this, I want to share a reminder that it is imperative that all students report all of their coursework, including any Dual Enrollment courses. We now check against the National Student Clearinghouse and verify their complete academic record. The information they report must match the entirety of their record. I share more about the impact of dual enrollment in one of our recent YouTube videos.

CSU Dual Enrollment and College Coursework Guide
Many students in California expand their coursework beyond high school and take college coursework before graduating from high school. Below provides some additional information on how courses are used for admission and how they should be reported within the CSU application.
Important Dual Enrollment Considerations
When advising, it is important to discuss whether a student’s goal is to simply meet admission requirements or to maximize transferable coursework toward CSU graduation.

Letter of Recommendation Information - What Can You Do Right Now!
If you are applying to schools that require letters of recommendation/school report and haven't completed the SR/LOR request process, email your school counselor ASAP.
1. Make sure you understand any specific LOR requirements for each college on your list (how many and do they have grade level or subject area requirements?)
2. Ask your teacher in person if possible or in an email.
3. If a teacher agrees, you can complete the Teacher LOR Survey on Naviance (it is a good practice to write your responses on a Google doc and transfer the information)
If You are Planning on Applying Through Common Application
There is a specific process for Sequoia High School.
See the recording for the grade level meeting.

Common App Direct Admissions Program
Common App has launched its 2026–2027 direct admissions program with more than 230 participating colleges. In mid-September, Common App will begin extending proactive admissions offers directly within the application to low- and middle-income and first-generation students. Students will find their offers in the direct admissions section in the app, making it easy to find, compare, and engage with offers.
Common App Scholarship Matching
Scholarship matching is now live for the 2026–2027 application cycle! As students complete the Common App, they’ll automatically be matched with scholarship opportunities that may be a good fit based on their responses. Last year, more than 1.5 million students matched with nearly 2,000 scholarship programs, and we’re excited to continue expanding access to these opportunities. Students can begin matching with scholarships before they apply to any colleges, starting as early as their junior year.

Help with writing Supplemental Essays
Use this resource from College Essay Guy to support your supplemental essay writing.
If planning on applying to schools require LOR or a School Report by your counselor you should;
- Create a Common Application account
- Add in Sequoia High School (052605) on the Education tab
- Add at least one college to your account on the My Colleges tab
- Sign FERPA Waiver located on the left hand side under "Recommenders and FERPA"
Our recommendation is that you Waive Your Rights because that is what colleges want you to do. All Counselors and some teachers will not write a letter if you do not waive your rights.
What is the FERPA Waiver? (From Common Application website)
Since FERPA is a complex law, we want to provide some key information before you respond to the FERPA waiver question.
1. How does FERPA relate to your college application?
FERPA regulates the privacy of student education records, which could include your application to the college where you enroll. FERPA also gives you the right to review confidential letters of recommendation provided as part of that application after you enroll.
2. In the application you'll be asked if you want to waive the right to review confidential letters of recommendation. What you should know about this waiver?
Waiving your right lets colleges know that you do not intend to read your recommendations, which helps reassure colleges that the letters are candid and truthful.
Some recommenders may decline to write a letter for you if you do not waive your rights. Check with your counselor or teachers to see if any of them follow such a policy.
Self-reported Transcript and Academic Record System (STARS)
The Self-reported Transcript and Academic Record System (STARS) allows students to submit their academic record directly to participating institutions. Completing STARS is required before an application can be reviewed.

Bachelor Degree programs at Community Colleges
The Latest Episode Is Now Live!
California community colleges are filling a gap in communities across many industries where employers need highly trained professionals. There simply aren't enough employees to meet the demand in these areas. This includes high-demand fields like healthcare, public safety, technology, AI, cyber security and other essential industries where the demand for skilled-workers is real.
California community college bachelor's degrees are unique in that they are developed with employers. These degrees are designed to lead directly to good paying jobs and allow students to find a career close to home. What we’ll cover in this episode isn't about changing the traditional path to a bachelor's degree. It's about strengthening it.
You CAN accomplish your dreams; you just need to know where to start. Learn more at ICanGoToCollege.com.
