Dearest HPS ML Families,

If you are new to HPS--welcome!! If you are returning--welcome back!! We hope you had an enjoyable and memorable summer and are ready for the 2026-2027 school year!

More than one language spoken at home and our strong sense of community are our superpowers! HPS’ diversity is real and visible, and every voice helps make our district a great place for all--the true meaning of community. We are rooted in our neighborhood and open to all who join HPS schools: newcomers, community partners, and friends who choose to learn, work, and volunteer with us.

Every day, you will find a connection here: In classrooms that challenge and support, in arts that ignite creativity, on fields/courts that build strength, in clubs that truly make a difference and, with families that share your experiences. We are a district where you are known, where expectations are high, and where support is real and true.

Any questions/concerns you may have, we are here for you...please reach out. You can message via ClassDojo or email at the below addresses:

Sincerely,

Afrin F. Alavi/MLD Director (aalavi@hamtramckschools.org)

Mirjana Maros/MLD District Facilitator (mmaros@hamtramckschools.org)

Afaf Abdo-Nagi Saleh/Home-to-School Coordinating Specialist (AASaleh@hamtramckschools.org)

Ebtisam Obeid/MLD Admin Assistant (eobeid@hamtramckschools.org)

Each year, students learning English in our schools and throughout MI take the WIDA ACCESS test. The test measures the English skills students use to engage in their classes.

The WIDA ACCESS test helps teachers understand if students continue to benefit from English language support services. To track your child’s learning, teachers review both their schoolwork and their WIDA ACCESS test scores.

You will be receiving your child’s WIDA ACCESS Individual Student Report in the coming days. In the report, you will find your child’s WIDA ACCESS test results. This report is for you to review and keep. You can use the information in the report to advocate for your child at school.

Please contact your building's ML Coordinator or administrator if you have questions about the WIDA ACCESS test or your child’s scores. Here are some questions that you may want to ask them:

Is my child making progress in building English language skills?
Besides scores from WIDA ACCESS, what other information do you use to measure progress?
How do you decide when my child stops receiving English language support services?
What can my child and I do at home to work on my child's English skills?

ClassDojo is a free app. Families can use it to:

Send and receive messages with your child’s teachers.
Read district, school, and classroom announcements.
See upcoming events.
Communicate in over 130 languages with automatic, two-way translation.

You will soon begin receiving messages from ClassDojo. You may receive them through the ClassDojo app, as text messages, or as emails. This depends on your preferences in ClassDojoand the contact information you gave your child's school.

If you do not have the ClassDojo app yet, you can download it from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. If you are a new user, please log in using the email address or cell phone number you gave your child's school.

If you have questions after your account is set up, please email parent@classdojo.com for direct support.

We look forward to welcoming you!

We have seen a rise in the number of student absences in recent school years. Students being present in school is without question the most important piece in the educational process. In order to improve our student attendance we need to partner with our families to address this issue. Research shows that both students and families underestimate the number of absences by about half. We are asking that you be aware and support us in encouraging regular and prompt attendance at school.

We ask that you be aware of the school calendar and consider that when making any travel plans. Our 2026-2027 school year calendar is posted on our website (LINK).
