DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT
St. Mary's Middle School proudly launched Phonics for Reading this year through support from the State Personnel Development Grant. Developed by literacy expert Dr. Anita Archer, this research-based program helps older striving readers—including those with dyslexia and English Learners—build essential decoding skills. The team worked diligently to identify students, form small groups, and implement the program with strong fidelity, leading to noticeable growth on both state assessments and the school’s reading screener, administered three times throughout the year.
This intervention led to some real success, moving students to do better on their state assessments and improve on the screener the students take 3 times throughout the school year.
Building on the success from this year, the team is refining their approach for even greater impact next year. Next year, groups will be formed before the first day of school, allowing for earlier intervention. Once the initial screener is completed, students will be added to existing groups as needed—ensuring every reader gets the support they need from the start.
REGION SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Paul Riccomini comes to the region to support Retention Strategies in Mathematics
Throughout this year, Dr. Paul Riccomini taught practical retention strategies—tools and
techniques teachers can immediately use to help students remember and build on past learning to
intervention specialists, math teachers, instruction coaches and build principals. These methods
have proven especially effective for supporting students with disabilities and those identified as
at-risk, ensuring all learners have the opportunity to succeed in mathematics. Participants have
shared with others the impact the strategies had on their students. One shared, “This math
retention inservice was the best overall inservice that I have ever been to. I was able to use so
much in the classroom and seeing improvement with retention!!!”
We are thrilled to announce we have partnered with Auglaize County ESC for Dr. Paul
Ricommini to repeat this series in the 2025-2026 school year. The dates for the elementary series
are September 24, October 22, 2025, and December 12, 2025, with a follow-up on May 7, 2026.
The middle school and high school series are September 24, 2025, October 23, 2025, and
