A Note from the Principal

Greetings Sanborn!

It was a full, and chilly, week! Our Varsity girls' soccer team and our Varsity football team each had an opportunity to play a game under the lights this week, which was an exciting evening for both teams. Although the final scores may not have been what we hoped for, we had a great turnout of fans for each game and want to thank everyone who was able to come out and support the teams!

Our NWEA testing has wrapped up at both the Middle and High School, other than some makeup assessments at the high school level that will be completed in the coming days. Our students and staff did a great job staying focused and working hard throughout the testing periods and we appreciate everyone's hard work! Coming up this week our grade 9-11 students will participate in PSATs while grade 12 students participate in a variety of activities for the annual Seniors in Action day.

We are quickly approaching the end of quarter one, as grades close on Friday, October 30th. It is important that students continue to work hard, follow-up on missed assignments, take the opportunity to reassess, and use time during WINN (MS) and Advisory (HS) to seek extra help as needed. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held just after the close of the quarter, on Tuesday, November 3rd, and are a great opportunity to connect with teachers to learn more about your student's performance and progress here at school. More details about sign-ups will be coming within the next week.

Let's make it a great week, Sanborn!

Edgar Allan Poe Projects

9th Grade English read "The Tell-Tale Heart" for a recent reading summative assessment. The assessment was split into three different parts; for the third part of the summative, students were asked to identify a theme from the story and to identify a scene that represented that theme. Students then spent three days creating their scenes in shoe boxes using air-dry clay. Students also did a quick write-up to explain how their scene represents the theme they identified in the story. The 9th graders worked very hard on their theme boxes and produced some impressive scenes!

PSATs

On Wednesday, October 14, students in grades 9 - 11 will participate in PSAT testing starting at 7:20 am. Please remind your student to bring their Chromebook and charger to school on Tuesday October 13, so they are prepared for testing, as they will be plugged in and left in their testing room overnight. Following the exam, we will have a fun activity in the gym to give everyone a bit of a brain break before continuing with advisory and the final two periods of the day. Students can prepare by getting a good night's sleep and arriving to school on time and ready to focus! Please reach out to Mr. Maxwell - smaxwell@sau17.net - with any questions.

Grade 6 STEM

In 6th Grade S.T.E.M., students had the opportunity to participate in an E/V Nautilus Ship-to-Shore interaction! The E/V Nautilus is a research vessel operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to exploring our oceans and making new discoveries in areas like biology, geology, archaeology, and marine history.

Before the call, students learned about the vessel and some of the technology used onboard, including multibeam sonar to map the seafloor and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that collect video footage and physical samples from the deep sea.

During their current expedition, “Deep-Sea Habitats of the Hawaiian Archipelago,” students had the opportunity to Zoom with a crew member aboard the ship as they explored the Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary. Students got to ask questions, learn about deep-sea exploration, and hear firsthand what it's like to work aboard a research vessel.

Pickup Patrol

Please remember to use Pickup Patrol to enter any absences, late arrivals, or early dismissals for all students in grades 6–12. Thank you for your help in ensuring accurate attendance records and smooth communication throughout the school day!
