Dear SKS,

For years I swore that I would never own a dog!

All of my friends can attest that I was petrified of them! I was the person who froze when even the friendliest little puppy with a wagging tail came bounding toward me. Dogs were simply not for me. However, they say "never say never," and the saying rings true!

One of my children was going through a really tough time, battling depression. He begged me for a dog. I told him absolutely not—at least at first. But then I started reading. Study after study showed the benefits of dogs in helping people manage anxiety and depression. The companionship, the routine, the unconditional love—all of it offered hope. So, I caved. That was seven years ago, and Eddie (named after a combination of Edward Scissorhands and Edgar Allan Poe)—a black-and-white Frenchie with big eyes and an even bigger personality—became part of our family. (Thanks to Susan Hodgens...it's a long story!!)

Eddie helped my son through a dark time, but what I didn’t expect (besides A LOT of hair on my clothes) was how much he would help me. He forced me to get over my ridiculous and irrational fear of dogs. I began to see what so many pet owners already know—that animals can be instruments of healing, comfort, and love. They don’t just live with us; they live for us. It’s no wonder St. Francis of Assisi saw animals as reflections of God’s goodness!

At SKS, the annual Blessing of the Animals has become a fun tradition. The schoolyard fills with dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, snakes, and even some stuffed animals to receive a special blessing. Please join us this Sunday to have YOUR pet blessed by Monsignor Brouwers and to

thank God for the furry, feathered, and finned companions who bless us every day. (See details below!)

After all, sometimes the best examples of God’s love don’t speak a word—they simply wag their tails. 🐾

Eddie and I will see you there!

G.B.Y.*

💕Jess Ryan, one of our fabulous school counselors, gave me this great idea -- and anytime we can celebrate our fabulous faculty and staff, I'm behind it 100%!!! Please read about the Heart Award below, and feel free to nominate someone anytime, all year!

What is a HEART Award?

The HEART (Honoring Excellence, Achievement, Resilience, and Teamwork) Award is given to an SKS staff member who exemplifies outstanding performance in their role and reflects the values that make SKS truly exceptional. This award honors individuals who consistently exceed expectations in their daily responsibilities, demonstrating sincere dedication to students, coworkers, and the broader school community.

Who can be nominated for a HEART Award?

All SKS staff members are eligible to be nominated for a HEART Award! Whether it’s the bus drivers who set a positive tone each morning, the teachers who inspire in the classroom, or the welcoming cafeteria staff, we recognize that every member of the Saint Katharine’s team plays a vital role in making our school exceptional.

Who can nominate a staff member for a HEART Award?

Anyone is welcome to nominate an SKS staff member for a HEART Award! Parents, students, colleagues, and members of the wider community are all encouraged to submit nominations.

Is there a deadline to submit a nomination?

Nominations for the HEART Award can be submitted at any time! Nominations are accepted year-round, and recipients are honored on a monthly basis.

Important Hoops Updates! Important Hoops Updates!

CYO Basketball Registration (5th through 8th grade) is OPEN

Dear SKS Families,

I hope this email finds you well. We are excited to announce that registration for SKS CYO Basketball is now open for students in 5th through 12th grades. The registration link can be found below. SKS CYO Basketball is open to students currently enrolled at SKS or those participating in PREP/CCD at SKS, OLA, or St. Isaac Jogues.

Important Updates

  • This year, we are changing our player evaluation process. There will be no callbacks; please see the details below.
  • Registration closes on November 1 for 5th through 8th grades. High School registration will remain open until early December.
  • We expect to have over 20 teams again this season. It is critical to register by November 1 to ensure an accurate headcount. After this date, we will not be able to add additional players.

If you are interested in coaching one of our basketball teams, especially at the JV level, please reply directly to this email. We are in need of new coaches this season.

Season Information & Important Dates

  • Divisions: JV (5th & 6th grades), Varsity (7th & 8th grades), High School (9th–12th grades). No evaluations for High School teams.
  • We aim to limit all teams to 10 players or fewer to maximize playing time during games.
  • There will be one “Wildcat” team for each of the following: JV Boys, JV Girls, Varsity Boys, and Varsity Girls. The Wildcat teams play in the most competitive CYO division and are made up of the most advanced players at each level.
  • Non-Wildcat teams have equal playing time requirements for all players. JV Wildcat teams guarantee a minimum of one quarter of playing time per player in all regular season games (not playoffs). There is no minimum playing time for Varsity Wildcat teams.
  • All teams will have at least one practice per week. We will do our best to accommodate teams wishing to schedule an additional weekly practice.

Player Evaluations (New Process)

This season, we will hold player evaluations (not tryouts or callbacks). Each level will have two evaluation sessions; we encourage all players to attend at least one session so we can accurately assess their skills and abilities. This process will help us form Wildcat teams and balance talent across non-Wildcat teams. Players hoping to be selected for a Wildcat team should attend both sessions if possible. Each player will receive a practice pinnie at their evaluation session to keep and use during practices throughout the season.

Evaluation Location:

Delaware County Christian School – Malin Campus

462 Malin Rd, Newtown Square, PA 19073

Evaluation Schedule

Sunday 11/2

  • 6:00–7:15 PM: JV Girls
  • 7:30–8:45 PM: Varsity Girls

Tuesday 11/4

  • 6:00–7:15 PM: JV Boys
  • 7:30–8:45 PM: Varsity Boys

Wednesday 11/5

  • 6:00–7:15 PM: JV Girls
  • 7:30–8:45 PM: Varsity Girls

Thursday 11/6

  • 6:00–7:15 PM: JV Boys
  • 7:30–8:45 PM: Varsity Boys

We hope to finalize and communicate team rosters by Sunday, November 9. Wildcat teams will begin practice the week of November 10; non-Wildcat teams will start the week of November 17.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We look forward to another exciting basketball season!
